Extremely beautiful and glittering jewel-like floor tiles covered all the hall ways and open areas at the first floor of the The International Art Museum of America (IAMA). H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, the artist, wielded his brush and applied colors to create those gorgeous and resplendent as gemstones and with rustic, charming tiles. So ordinary people could replace common tiles, marble, and granite slabs in the old style, and enjoy the splendor of earthly mansions and the beauty of heavenly palaces.

When you see these four tiles with gemstone patterns, it seems there is nothing more to say other than they give you a feeling of beauty and naturalness. However, as soon as you realize they are actually four paintings, you will marvel at them in a state of perplexity. All of them are indeed paintings in patterns of jade. They are representative of works that belong to the “Chaoshi” (super fine) style of painting. Starting clockwise from the top left, they are Dragon-Scale Jade, Autumn Aqueous, Fortune Vase Jade, and Yellow Loveliness Jade. Their patterns, watery tone, luster, and moist appearance are completely the same as those of natural jade objects. Such accomplishment clearly shows the calligraphic and painting mastery of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III in the style of “Chaoshi.”

In The H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Cultural and Art Museum, has more many different color-painted tiles on display. They all completely resemble natural stones in terms of color, luster, grain, and aesthetic impression. These tiles can be classified into six main categories: the Rustic Elegance Collection, the Lyrical Charm Collection, the Luxurious Gem Collection, the Serene Nobility Collection, the Contemporary Distinction Collection, and the Heavenly Stone Collection.

In many world-class building and decoration material exhibitions held in the United States, China, and elsewhere, the tiles created by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III have each time attracted the greatest stream of people. They have been appraised as being the best tiles in the world. Yun Sculpture is a new form of art that H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III created for humanity. It has never appeared before in history. Since the advent of Yun sculptures, artwork that can never be duplicated has appeared for the first time in the human world. 

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III created these miraculous sculptures containing mysterious mist in order to make people around the world understand the magnificence of the True Buddha-dharma. These miraculous works can be seen and touched. However, they cannot be created by anyone who is not a being of the highest holiness.

The mysterious mist in these sculptures can be found floating among wondrously carved, seemingly changing, and intriguingly interconnected hanging rock formations. Why is such art called sculptures containing mysterious mist? It is because in those sculptures there is the mysterious and beautiful scene of auspicious mist swirling in between hanging rock formations. This is a manifestation of the realization of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III in the craftsmanship vidya and the inner realization vidya.

In the treasure room of International Art Museum of America, there is a sculpture entitled “Mysterious Boulder With Mist.” After carving the material into the form of an oval boulder, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III created two grottoes inside the boulder, each of which contains its own scenery. When you look inside the right grotto, you will see thick mist enveloping everything. The structure of the carved scenery inside this hole is vague, since it cannot be clearly seen through the mist. You are left with the impression that the mist is a few dozen yards deep inside the hole when it is actually only three or four feet deep. When you look inside the left grotto, you will see that there is no mist at all. You will clearly see the structure of the carved scenery inside this hole. The material used to carve those two grottoes was the same, the colors applied to both of them were the same, and their depth is the same. The carving skills and inner-realization of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III caused this mysterious phenomenon of one side containing thick, enveloping mist and the other side containing no mist at all.

It is no wonder that people praise these sculptures containing mysterious mist as the only form of art in human history that contains natural mist. People also praise them as unique and precious masterpieces that cannot be found in nature. These works of art are one type of sculpture created by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.

Many people have been astonished by the breathtaking beauty of Yun sculpture artwork created by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. They spoke heartfelt words, such as, “This is a treasure sent to the human world from God,” “This is a holy object from a Buddha-land brought here by a Buddha,” “Its beauty captures people’s souls,” and “Since the appearance of Yun sculptures, earthly jewels are like stars surrounding a bright Moon, losing all their color and splendor.” This is indeed true. Some people brought the most exquisite jade and jewelry as well as splendid stone sculptures for comparison. All of those objects immediately lost their beauty and luster when compared with Yun sculptures. There is a world of difference between those objects and Yun sculptures. None of those objects can be regarded as being in the same category as Yun sculptures.

Art Frames that Truly Complement Paintings

From ancient times to the present, the art of making frames has existed in the East, the West, regions of different nationalities, among the general population and within imperial palaces. There have been many kinds of frames for pictures, paintings, and other forms of art. There are truly unique, beautiful, and elegant art frames displayed in International Art Museum of America, located in San Francisco downtown, that I never seen at anywhere else before.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, the artist created sculpted art frames in the style of various natural elements. Examples of this include frames made in the style of ganoderma lucidum (a type of hard dark brown fungus supposed to possess supernatural powers), tropical plants that wind around trees, coral, ancient-looking unearthed cultural relics, white and green jade, and winding vines, faux withered vines, faux tree roots, faux white jade, faux old wood, faux spotted jade, faux ganoderma lucidum, faux red coral, etc. All frames there are artistic fascinating.

The ganoderma lucidum art frames are formed by putting together many of those hard mushroom-type fungi. Of course, such frames are not composed of real ganoderma lucidum. Rather, the ganoderma lucidum in such frames are created from carving and application of colors. The shapes of the Ganoderma lucidum are connected together on the wooden frame to form an exquisite, integrated shape. Those ganoderma lucidum have the same color, air, and shape of real ganoderma lucidum. Furthermore, rare thousand-year-old ganoderma lucidum, old hundred-year-old ganoderma lucidum, and new tender Ganoderma lucidum are interconnected to form an elegant and charming appearance. Many ganoderma lucidum mushroom caps and mushroom stems are interconnected in a beautifully rhythmic manner. The interchange between substance and emptiness, highness and lowness, largeness and smallness, and thickness and thinness creates a highly elegant appearance. 

Reishi Mushroom art frame was sculpted and painted with oil colors. It captures the form and texture of reishi mushrooms and has the gracefulness of an aged cultural relic.

The faux green jade art frames have an ancient-looking green jade color to them that is steady and elegant. This color is not stale or old-fashioned in the least. Rather, it is a natural combination of refined blackish green and sprightly verdant, although there is not much verdant hue. This color expresses the essence of old jade that has slowly matured over thousands of years, with a vigorous and spirited quality that is clearly seen. This refined green jade color will every now and again reveal a lustrous white, like the color of the feathers of immortal cranes. Such a mixture of hues truly transcends all traces of the mundane. All of these various shades of green interconnect and interact so naturally there is not the slightest sign they were created by man. Therefore, it is difficult to fathom how the creator of these frames could harmonize these colors so masterfully, fittingly, flawlessly, and beautifully.

Each and every detail of the frames in the museum, expresses an extremely natural quality in both form and spirit. Some frames are devoid of the dark spots or broken parts that natural objects have after being exposed to wind, frost, rain, and snow. His Holiness has developed to a perfect degree the depiction of the fleeting beauty that natural treasures display during their growth process. Simply put, the worth and prestige of any painting mounted to those frames will increase tremendously.

Claude Monet and Yuhua Shouzhi Wang: An Exhibition of Water Lily Paintings in Dialogue

An Exhibition of “Water Lily Paintings in Dialogue” was held between August 14th – August 19th 2021 at H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Cultural And Art Museum, in West Covina CA.

The exhibition was a dialogue between the water lily paintings of Claude Monet and Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang. Monet is the founder of “impressionism.” Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang is the founder of “imagery-naturalism.” Both artists are the most distinguished virtuosos among International First-Class Artists. This Exhibition of Paintings in Dialogue features 16 oil color water lily paintings from each artist. At the same time, 16 lotus ink paintings created by Yuhua Shouzhi Wang are also on view. The Monet paintings are high-definition reproductions from his water lily paintings.

Master Claude Monet is the founder of the “impressionism” painting style known throughout the world. He was an International First-Class Artist with landmark accomplishment. His Water Lily Paintings are renowned throughout the world. His color is dynamic. With brushstrokes that capture changing light and shadow over the lily pond, Monet portrays foggy morning sceneries of all seasons. Monet is adept at presenting the changes in light and shadow, placing special emphasis on their haziness in the atmosphere. With oil color and technical mastery, he infuses the landscape with the floating light, moving shadow, and atmosphere to present the beauty and colors of water lilies in many layers of depth.

In his late years, he immersed his entire mind and being into his pond of water lilies in Giverny. From then on, his subject matter never deviated from the water lilies. He lived and breathed water lilies. He was a world-renowned master in water lily painting. Monet’s colors are fresh, graceful, sophisticated, seasoned, and brilliant. With sweeping and carefree brushwork, he applies color at will. He places emphasis on haziness, and his use of bright colors are not at all garish. Monet’s paintings are devoid of artisanal dullness, both his technique and form are natural and audacious, achieving the oneness of form and spirit. He is a world master of water lily painting, and fittingly an International First-Class Virtuoso. His artistry has achieved the Class of Divinity and the Class of Ease.

Master Yuhua Shouzhi Wang is the founder of the “imagery-naturalism” style in painting. She has attained the landmark achievement of being the only Asian top-level world virtuoso today who has been accorded the International First-Class Artist title. Her paintings are characterized by noble style, magnificent artistry, masterful technique, magnificent composition, richness of layer and depth, and audacious, beautiful impasto color. The misty atmospheres within them exude another-worldly elegance. She is a very versatile painter. Her paintings encompass landscape, flower-bird composition, animal, flower, fish-shrimp composition, and figure, as well as super realistic art and surrealistic abstraction. Stemming from a foundation of oil color painting, she shatters the normative form of everyday objects, capturing the naturally evolving nature of the imageries that come from everyday life yet transcend everyday life. She has founded the unique “imagery-naturalism” painting style and established a landmark artistic achievement. She has attained the “ten ultimate artistries” in her infinitely evolving style, and her accomplishments are unprecedented.

In 2008, the artworks of Dr. Yuhua Shouzhi Wang were exhibited in the Gold Room at the United States Capitol. The United States Congress recognized her as “a great artist and sculptor” for her outstanding accomplishments, and officially chronicled such recognition in the Congressional Record. The same record also mentioned that Dr. Wang “takes great pleasure in helping others, is a selfless person whose moral character is noble, and has made great contributions to the development of cultural exchange between the East and the West.”

Out of many artists’ works, the World Federation of UNESCO (WFUCA) accorded Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang’s artworks the “WFUCA2013” title. The New York Academy of Art, upon assessing and determining Professor Wang’s level of artistry, conferred to her the “International First-Class Artist” title. An “International First-Class Artist” title certificate was also issued by the U.S. National Commission for WFUCA to Professor Wang on December 20, 2020, in which they recognized the professor’s accomplishment as among the top of International First Class Artists.

There is a permanent exhibition of Dr. Yuhua Shouzhi Wang’s paintings in International Art Museum of America at San Francisco downtown.

Asian Art Museum at a Glance

San Francisco is truly a paradise of museums. There are so many museums and galleries in the city — fine arts, modern arts, history, science, cable car, even an ice cream museum. One of my favorites is the Asian Art Museum.

An amazing interactive activity for kids of all ages was a digital aquarium where you are given paper with an outline of an aquatic animal to color and then your art piece is scanned and appears swimming on the wall. I tried that too, to feel like a kid one more time.

My only one little complaint, is there are only a few Chinese ink paintings. Chinese ink painting is one of the oldest art traditions still practiced today. One important form of ink painting is Chinese calligraphy, which can be traced back to 4000 B.C. So it is a very important part of Asian art history. However I found a smaller sized museum located on market street, just a couple of blocks away from the Asian Art Museum, that showcased this type of artwork. The International Art Museum of America has Chinese painting art including landscapes, flowers and birds, fish and insects, and figures. The techniques, whether it is fine brushwork, freehand brushwork, or splashing ink, are all ingenious, with authentic traditional techniques and innovations. Every piece is world class level. It truly gave me an uplifting aesthetic enjoyment.

Dr. Yuhua Shouzhi Wang is the Lifetime Honorary Chairwoman of the International Art Museum of America. The museum has a dedicated gallery exhibiting her artworks. Her paintings encompass a broad range of styles and subject matters, including landscapes, animals, flowers, birds, and so forth, all of which have reached the summit of world class artistic excellence. Based on her lotus and water lily paintings, artists have acclaimed that Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang is the foremost lotus painter of all times. No artist in the past would have been able to surpass her accomplishment, and her works will continue to inspire generations to come. Among all notable lotus painters, her skills are extremely profound, substantial, and masterful, and she is among the most distinguished artists in history. Her artistic achievement has reached perfection at the summit of the “ten ultimate artistries.”

Professor Wang’s works have been exhibited and widely acclaimed in the United States, China, Asia, and Europe. In 2008, the United States Congress held an exhibition of the professor’s works, calling her art a “treasure of the world.” The U.S. Congressional Record chronicled the recognition that “her lotus flower paintings are unsurpassed and are extremely valuable.” Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang has also been critically acclaimed by news media that “she fuses vivacity, power, color, scholarly essence, quintessence of stone and bronze inscriptions, spirituality, erudition, and morality into oneness in her art. She is the foremost artist in the world.” Back in 2013, out of the works of all painters, the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (WFUCA) awarded the title “WFUCA2013” to the artworks of Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang.

The Kingdom of Thailand’s Department of Culture especially organized a solo exhibition of the art of Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang at their Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center in Bangkok. The Department of Culture also notified all university and middle school teachers and students to visit the exhibition and study the artworks. In 2019, When Professor Wang’s solo exhibition was held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center that used to be the Sino-Soviet Friendship Building, a record-breaking number of people visited the show. The Museum Director Wu Shufang stated that the museum had never experienced such an overwhelming number of visitors since its official opening, and for this exhibition, they had to post notices to limit admission.

In 2019, when her works were exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris, guests – including artists, collectors, and art critics – were thrilled and overwhelmed with joy, praise, and admiration. They felt that the French people had never had such an experience before. The experts acclaimed that Prof. Yuhua Shouzhi Wang is a virtuoso of equal standing as Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gaugain, and Monet. They said, “Professor Wang’s paintings are so magnificent that they amaze us. We have never thought that the level of artistry of Eastern ink painting can surpass that of a few centuries of Western traditions. Professor Wang is the only one who has achieved that.”

Renowned art critic Aude de Kerros has commented: “I have curated and critiqued so many art exhibitions, yet I have never seen an exhibition like this where all the guests are so touched and amazed by the art, and all of them expressed praise. I truly cannot describe their surprise and joy. The art experts do not even want to leave after seeing such exquisite artworks. You can see that so many people are staying this late and they are not leaving.” Professor Peter Drake, Provost of the New York Academy of Art, presented a certificate to recognize Prof. Yuhua Shouzhi Wang‘s extraordinary contributions to representational and abstract art, stating “Dr. Wang’s exceptional accomplishment has been to straddle the often-oppositional worlds of representation and abstraction. Her works are both finely crafted and deeply experiential, instilling the viewer with a sense of art that both comes from nature and is nature itself.” The Provost also personally led graduate students to the International Art Museum of America to see Professor Wang’s artworks in the Museum’s collection. He also gave lectures on site. Faculty members and students were all thrilled to see the original paintings in the museum, and they studied the artworks by copying them.

On December 20, 2020, the UNESCO convention was held on the occasion of the 2020 United Nations International Day for Human Solidarity, and the United Nations Secretary-General His Excellency António Guterres attended in person and delivered a speech. During the convention, the Chairman of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations Guy Djoken proclaimed Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang’s title and level of artistic achievement, which was based on a determination of the artistry accomplished by the Professor in her paintings. The issuance of the “International First-Class Artist” title to Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang on December 20 was a determinative recognition that Professor Wang has attained the highest level of achievement among international first-class artists. This is the ultimate world class title for artistic accomplishment, and Professor Wang is the only Asian artist who has ever received such a title.

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen congratulated Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang for being honored with the title recognizing her as a world class international artist on December 20. On December 29, Chairman Guy Djoken went to the International Art Museum of America in San Francisco to personally present the title certificate to Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang.

Professor Wang is a person of humility and noble morality. She is modest, unassuming, beneficent and genial. The characteristics of an artist’s paintings essentially reflect the character of the painter.

The Explanation of the Buddha’s Title – “H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

On April 3, 2008, a solemn and dignified first-publishing ceremony of a fact-recording book entitled H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, which published jointly by the World Buddhism Publishing LLC and the World Dharma Voice, Inc., was held at the Library of the Congress of the United States. The book was also formally accepted into the collection of the Library of the Congress of the United States. Only since that time, did people in the world know that Master Wan Ko Yee, who had been broadly respected by the great masses and who had also been known as Great Dharma King Yangwo Yeshe Norbu, had been recognized by the world’s leaders, regent dharma kings, and great rinpoches of Buddhism through official documents as the third incarnation of Dorje Chang Buddha, who is the primordial Sambhogakaya Buddha of the universe. The Buddha’s name is H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Since then, people began to address His Holiness the Buddha by “Namo[1] Dorje Chang Buddha III.” This is similar to the situation that Sakyamuni Buddha’s name was Prince Siddhartha Gotama before attaining Buddhahood. However, after Sakyamuni Buddha had attained Buddhahood, His title changed to “Namo Sakyamuni Buddha.” That is why we now address His Holiness the Buddha as “H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

In particular, on December 12, 2012, the Senate Resolution No. 614 of the United States Congress officially used “His Holiness” in the name addressing Dorje Chang Buddha III (That is to say, “H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III”) Since then, the title and status of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has been definitive by nature. And, as a matter of fact, “Dorje Chang Buddha III” is a name used legally in governmental and official legislative documents. Therefore, the previously used respected name and titles such as “Wan Ko Yee,” Great Master, and Great Dharma King no longer exist.

However, the news below was published before the Buddha’s title of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III was publicly announced. At that time, people did not know about the true status of His Holiness the Buddha. Therefore, to respect the true history, we still kept the names used before the title of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III was legitimately determined in republishing this news. However, all must clearly know that the only legitimate name of His Holiness the Buddha is H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and all other names used before the legitimate determination no longer exist.

The government of the People’s Republic of China built a palace-like museum to house the many awards and honors received by H.H. Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) along with examples of his paintings, calligraphy and books on logic and Buddhist philosophy. This was the only such museum constructed while the honoree was still living. The buildings and gardens are in the classic Chinese Imperial style and consist of seven separate pavilions or “halls.”

At a ceremony held at the museum to honor H.H. Master Wan Ko Yee(H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III), the building began to drip nectar. For three years the 5,612 experts and scholars of the World Poets and Culture Congress, from 48 member countries and territories, undertook an exhaustive review in the comprehensive research and merits of H.H. Master Wan Ko Yee(H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) with respect to Buddhism, the Humanities, Chinese painting and calligraphy and ethical morality. Based on the assessment of their findings, the Fourth Session of the World Congress bestowed upon H.H. Master Wan Ko Yee(H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) the title “International Master: of the “Preeminently Distinguished” literary rank, or “Preeminent Distinguished International Master” in full. H.H. Master Wan Ko Yee(H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) was presented with a mortar, robe and the inscribed gold medallion of the “Preeminent Distinguished International Master.” This award was announced in Hungary with a congratulatory awards ceremony held in Sichuan Province in China at the Master Wan Ko Yee(H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) Museum. During that presentation the perfectly dry museum dripped nectar and auspicious clouds and a dragon appeared in the bright blue sky.

The five hundred Arhat jade carvings with different expressions and solemn virtues have a sacred appearance that looks like they were carved in heaven.

Da Mo Zu Shi, A Chinese Painting Appreciation

Patriarch Bodhidharma (Da Mo Zu Shi) was the most legendary master in Chinese Zen Buddhism history, and he’s been well known in China. When I was young, my grandmother used to tell me the folk tales of Patriarch Bodhidharma. I’ve always wondered what Patriarch Bodhidharma looked like.

One day in International Art Museum of America, I saw a painting of Da Mo Zu Shi, the artist is H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. It gave me a really deep impression — A majestic black-faced holy monk, seemingly quiet but reflecting unparalleled spiritual power, seems to have traveled through thousands of years of time and space, and suddenly appeared in front of me.

This painting, drawn in the freehand style, was created from only a small number of brush strokes. The point of view of the picture, the thick and imposing character modeling, and the simple and rich color application endow the picture with an ancient and muddy artistic style. 

Through the artist’s seasoned brushwork, this painting captures the natural essence of all things. Let’s look at some specific parts of the picture. Bright eyes shine under the dark eyebrows like full autumn moons. The mouth seems to breathe with the grandeur of eternity.

Hair, eyebrows, and beard are painted with brush strokes like scraping iron; the facial contours of the characters are drawn with iron lines, and the brushwork is refined and powerful. At the bottom of the picture is the robe of the patriarch, made by heavy and strong brushwork.

This artistry, devoid of the slightest affectation, shows the natural ease with which the artist wields the brush when creating calligraphy and paintings. It is the essence of Zen, the truth of the universe, naturalness that is free of attachment.

Patriarch Bodhidharma was the twenty-eighth generation descendant of Zen Buddhism. About a thousand years ago, he came to China. He crossed the mountains and deserts on foot, and crossed the rivers with a reed raft. 

Upon reaching China, the Patriarch met a monk named Huike. At that time, Master Huike was quite famous but still an ordinary monk, not having reached enlightenment. Due to a series of misunderstandings, Master Huike believed that the Patriarch Bodhidharma was insulting the scriptures of Buddhism, and thus he assumed he must be a devil. So Huike was ready to denounce Patriarch Bodhidharma.

Master Huike had a chain of iron beads hanging around his neck. He took it off and threw it at Patriarch Bodhidharma with all his strength. This act of violence caught his target by surprise, knocking out his two front teeth.

Naturally, the Patriarch’s first reflex was to spit out his broken teeth. But he was an Arhat at the time, which meant that should his teeth touch the ground, there would be a three year drought. To spare the common people from this disaster, he swallowed his broken teeth and left without saying a word. His actions showed great compassion and forbearance. 

Humbled by the Bodhidharma’s strength of character, Master Huike followed the patriarch, becoming his disciple, and, eventually, the second generation of Zen master in China.

The portrait of the Patriarch seems to exhale a holy breath, which lightens the lives of all those around it. It expresses the original nature of Zen, eternal and immutable. Those who view it have experienced a great spiritual encounter, which brings about a subtle but powerful change in their lives.

When IAMA was first founded, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III had loaned the museum about 100 of his pieces. The works of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III have been recognized with numerous awards over the years – the Presidential Gold Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King Legacy Award for International Service and Leadership, Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Arts in 2004 and a World Peace Prize at the US Capitol in 2011.

Since its founding in 2011, the International Art Museum has been a place of peaceful reflection and international understanding. The collection in the museum has grown to include art from China, Algeria, Belgium, England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Scotland, and the United States. The works of traditional calligraphy, Western oil painting, modern ink brush landscapes, sculptures and portraits, all work together to showcase the diversity of human experience and perception.

This Christmas break, I went to see the Van Gogh Immersive exhibit in downtown San Francisco. It was a unique, moving, delightful and expansive experience It was my first time to see the artworks of Van Gogh, and the show was a great window on the artists work, creatively put together and nicely presented.

The show inspired me to find out more information and artworks by him. I found that Van Gogh was generally considered one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. The striking color, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work powerfully influenced the current style of Expressionism in modern art. Van Gogh was a pioneer in the movement of impressionism by applying a mix of brilliantly colorful, vigorous brushstrokes. I like his sunflower paintings. Van Gogh’s paintings of Sunflowers are among his most famous. Those sunflower paintings felt so bright and warm, and they had a special significance for Van Gogh: they communicated ‘gratitude’. 

From the internet, I also found a very interesting article that compared Van Gogh’s sunflowers with other artists, titled Vincent van Gogh, Qi Baishi, and H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Compared. Whose Artwork is the Best? Written by Jiguang Lin.

I was really impressed by the comparison conclusion :

“When those art critics carried out the detailed research of the Sunflowers by Van Gogh and Qi Baishi as well as H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, the critics tried to copy the artworks by all three artists. After copying the works by Van Gogh and Qi Baishi, they felt deeply that through hands-on practice, they indeed gained more understanding of their works. It would not be easy but not so difficult either for one to really reach their artistic level. As for the Sunflowers by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, they found it rather difficult to copy.  Even though they tried many times, they had a hard time just copying the form, let alone the spirit.

The author concluded, “The Sunflowers by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III clearly showed the artist’s solid foundation and prolific skills in the Eastern and Western painting traditions. They comprise the essences in both traditions and display a brushwork, sentiment and colors that are one of a kind. The color tones and brushstrokes are rich, dense, soothing and elegant. Lively brushwork paints an animated charm that is whole, evincing a miraculous and expansive spirit and aura as well as a strong vitality. As for the Sunflowers oil painting in which H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III depicted some flowers inside a vase, the artistry is extraordinary and full of variations; the composition is simple yet abstruse. The flowers are natural and gracious, such that they give an impression of unpredictability, reaching a state of oneness with the universe and emanating a sharp animated spirit.

The ink-wash painting Sunflowers by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has an uninhibited, natural, and spontaneous brushwork that is dense, bold, and robust, but also elegant and agile. It exhibits a charm that is like stone and bronze inscriptions. Overall, the whole painting manifests a harmonious and moving imagery, naturally emanating a lively vivaciousness and a carefree, spirited aura”.

The author of the article Mr. Lin mentioned he purposely visit the International Art Museum of American in San Francisco, which has a great deal of collection of the art works by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. The very next day I visited the museum, which was also free admission. I was profoundly impressed by the grand and beautiful art works in the museum. There are various artworks that are created with different kinds of material. Some are bold and forthright, some are charmingly meticulous and astounding. The oeuvre is not made up of just one single style. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has independently originated sixteen unique schools of painting. Many famous painters spent their entire lives focusing on one kind of artistic subject or theme in order to establish their own school of that one style. Besides the different kinds of paintings, there are some other art works in the museum such as carvings, Chinese calligraphy, painted tiles, splendid jade, and unique art frame has the color and texture of tree root, they are all created by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III as well. These truly are the manifestation of Buddha’s supreme wisdom.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and Van Gogh have different perspective of the Creation of Art, the motivation of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s creation comes from the desire to make the most perfect artistic treasure to the world. Van Gogh’s quote: “Art is to console those who are broken by life”.
