Ven. Junmai Baima Dorje Rinpoche is a nirmanakaya of Vajravarahi. He is the fourth Ven. Baima Dorje Rinpoche. Various auspicious signs manifested at the birth of the rinpoche. When the rinpoche was five years old, the national master of Bhutan, H.H. Dharma King Dilgo Khyentse, personally signed and issued a recognition certificate recognizing the identity of the rinpoche. H.H. Dharma King Penor and H.E. Dharma King Rabjam also personally wrote recognition certificates.
At the age of about three, the child rinpoche used two fingers to transform a small, thick Tibetan knife into the shape of a coil. After passing through many hands, that knife is now at Hua Zang Si in San Francisco, where a special place for that holy object has been established to display it for public worship and veneration. The rinpoche currently resides at the Shechen Monastery. He has received initiations from the esoteric lineage of H.H. the 10 th Panchen Lama and other persons of great holiness and virtue. The rinpoche benefits all living beings by applying the wisdom and realization of a Bodhisattva.
I respectfully honor the Three Bodies and Four Wisdoms of the Dharma King of the Three Spheres, H.H. Yangwo Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu: We were fortunate to be able to read the book about the Buddha Vajradhara Dharma King, A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma — A Collection of H.H. Yangwo Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu’s Accomplishments Manifesting Complete Proficiency in Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism and Perfect Mastery of the Five Vidyas . We cannot describe how deeply astonished and moved we were. Those thirty main categories of accomplishments present a splendid sight that includes the cikitsvidya (healing vidya), silpakarmasthanavidya (craftsmanship vidya), sabdavidya (sound vidya), adhyatmavidya (inner realization vidya), and hetuvidya (causality or Buddhist logic vidya) in their holy sense. Such accomplishments have never been seen before in the history of Buddhism. A Treasury of True Buddha- Dharma is the highest Buddha-dharma treasure and manifests H.H. Great Dharma King’s supreme realization and virtue. H.H. Great Dharma King is the first holy being who used true realization to display fully in the dharma realm the teachings of the Buddha! H.H. Great Dharma King is the true Buddha Vajradhara, the teacher of both humans and celestial beings! In this Dharma-Ending Age, we are deeply happy that living beings in the earthly realm have the guidance of H.H. Great Dharma King. May H.H. Great Dharma King forever live in the world and forever teach the dharma!
The Yidam plays a crucial role in the daily practice of Buddhist disciples, especially for practitioners of Esoteric Buddhism. This article explains how you acquire a yidam and how your relationship with your yidam can develop.
The Buddha Master, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, tells us that “your Yidam is the holy being presiding over the particular Dharma you decide to practice in order to attain accomplishment.” The Buddha Master also tells us we have to face our Yidam and the Dharma protectors of our Yidam. And you cannot hide from either your Yidam or the Dharma Protectors. You may wonder how you know who your Yidam is. As you advance in your practice, you may receive a particular Dharma of Selection and be told who your Yidam is. As I understand it, this is probably a being that you have already achieved some accomplishments with in past lives and you are already familiar with the Dharma associated with that Yidam. You do not practice more than one Yidam Dharma at a time. Many of us start this practice with Kuan Yin Bodhisattva as our Yidam and follow the “Vajra Yoga Perfection Dharma” that you can find in True Stories about a Holy Monk. You may be fortunate to receive other Yidam practices from authentic Dharma masters and rinpoches. You would only do one yidam practice at a time, but you may also follow different Yidams throughout your spiritual career. I was told that if you cannot receive a Dharma of Selection, you may select the Yidam for whom you have the greatest affinity. In fact, you do not pick the Yidam, the Yidam actually picks you. You must keep your precepts and not hold any of the “128 Evil and Erroneous Views” in the Supreme and Unsurpassable Mahamudra of Liberation.

Do not be frustrated if something is not clear. If you are not progressing in your Yidam practice, go back and reflect on your cultivation. You should be doing this three times per day anyhow. If you are not keeping the precepts or developing your bodhichitta, you cannot progress. If your cultivation is good, your Yidam may come and teach you what you need to know. I have had that happen as have several of my students.
Once I was not clear on how to visualize a particular mantra and my Yidam showed me how to do it. I have a student who does not live near California and who is unable to visit either the Buddha Master or me very often. He is a serious, sincere, and compassionate cultivator and does, however, have a very good relationship with his Yidam. She has helped him on many matters. I recently received an email from him telling me how much he had gained from his last trip to the Holy Vajrasana Temple and being able to study Expounding the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra. Even though he was only able to study this Dharma a short time this trip, he gained realizations which he didn’t get in all the previous years he had studied here. He said, “It made a deep impact on my life and I am very grateful that I was able to read even this little bit of it. Since then I was reflecting even more on how our daily lives relate to achieving accomplishment in the Dharma, how cultivation and Dharma practice need to go together. I often compared it with breathing, like inhaling and exhaling following one another and both are necessary to keep [your] life working. This morning I received an instruction from [my Yidam] on this topic while I was doing my Dharma practice which I would like to share with you.”
He went on to explain that his Yidam told him that he should see that cultivation is like collecting firewood. Doing a Dharma practice is like igniting a fire. If we have not collected enough wood (or any at all) the fire of wisdom cannot burn. So even a kind thought is like a dry twig which will fuel the fire. So, cultivating ourselves seriously and not slipping in any moment is like piling up a huge amount of firewood which will cause the fire to burn strongly and result in accomplishments.I was delighted. He said I could share the teaching as an example of how our Yidams do teach us, but we must do the practice and cultivate our behavior. The Buddha Master tells us in Learning from Buddha that if you learn one of the Mind Essences from the Supreme and Unsurpassable Mahamudra of Liberation “. . .to the point of proficiency and put it into practice, you need not worry about not being able to learn Buddha Dharma. Even if I, your Master, do not teach you, the Yidam will teach you.”
The most venerable H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche, also known as H.E. Xiazhu Qiuyang Rinpoche, is a highly accomplished Buddhist master from Guoluo, renowned for his spiritual achievements and mastery of Vajrayana teachings. Born in the winter of 1945, his birth was marked by extraordinary signs: thunder echoed across the sky, and colorful flowers blossomed spontaneously on the grasslands surrounding his birthplace. Many local herdsmen witnessed these rare and auspicious omens, heralding the arrival of an extraordinary being.
Renowned mantra master Regong, a revered monk, recognized the young child as the reincarnation of the venerable Chagailong Cichengdaji Rinpoche and the great master Naropa. From an early age, Rinpoche dedicated himself to the welfare of all sentient beings, living a life of simplicity and spiritual practice in the mountains. Throughout his life, H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche devoted himself to intense ascetic practice, receiving direct teachings from the supreme Vajrayogini and attaining profound realization. It is said that he could soar through the sky, using his monk robes as wings, a testament to his deep mastery of esoteric yoga.
At the age of fourteen, Rinpoche was ordained as a monk under the guidance of Xiari Huzuo Qintu Dannima. Over the years, he studied under more than 100 highly accomplished masters from all major Tibetan Buddhist schools, including:
H.H. the Tenth Panchen Lama and H.H. the Sixth Dharma King Gongtang Yongzeng from the Gelug sect.
H.H. Dodrupchen Rinpoche and Khenpo Mengse from the Nyingma sect.
Kanda Chiwa Gadan from the Sakya sect.
Lama Wangcai Kazhige from the Kagyu sect.
Jiana Bannan from the Jonang sect.
From these masters, H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche absorbed the essence of both exoteric and esoteric teachings. His spiritual journey led him to receive numerous secret mind-dharma teachings and unique empowerments, passed down without reservation, like water flowing freely from a vessel.
Rinpoche spent much of his life wandering through remote mountains and plains, sleeping in caves, eating cold rice and vegetables gathered from alms, and wearing discarded clothing. He lived humbly, indifferent to worldly praise or criticism, appearing at times like a wandering madman. For 25 years, he did not speak a single word, dedicating himself entirely to the practice of the Dharma, undisturbed by the distractions of the world. His rigorous practice took him to numerous sacred sites across Tibet, Qinghai, and India, where he engaged in solitary retreat, including seven years of intense meditation at a holy site in India.
Through these practices, Rinpoche achieved profound realization in the Dakini Dharma, the Great Perfection (Dzogchen) teachings, Kalachakra Vajra Dharma, and Green Tara Dharma. His deep connection with Vajrayogini from a young age allowed him to access highly secret dakini teachings. Buddhist masters of great virtue have recognized H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche as the true reincarnation of the great master Naropa, revered as the “venerable leader of 100,000 dakinis.”
In a historic event, the International Buddhism Sangha Association conducted an unprecedented Drawing Lots From a Golden Vase Ceremony, drawing one lot from 120 sealed lots. This ceremony affirmed that H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche is indeed the reincarnation of Patriarch Naropa, a recognition that had been previously confirmed by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.
H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche has been praised by numerous revered masters, including H.H. the Tenth Panchen Lama, H.H. Dharma King Yongzeng, and H.H. Dharma King Jigme Phuntsok. Xiaridong Rinpoche, a master of the Yamantaka Dharma, described him as “a truly great master of the Dakini Dharma,” while H.H. Dharma King Jigme Phuntsok hailed him as “an extremely rare master who has perfected the Four Initiations Dharma.”
Despite his vast accomplishments, H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche remains humble and approachable, freely exercising his supernatural powers without attachment. Known for miraculous feats such as flying, multiplying his body, walking underwater, understanding multiple languages, foreseeing disasters and blessings, and reading people’s minds, Rinpoche is revered as “the unhindered rinpoche.” Clothing and personal items that Rinpoche has worn or used are said to be imbued with miraculous blessings. Many Tibetans have reported turning disasters into blessings, surviving dangerous situations, or recovering from serious illnesses after wearing or ingesting a small piece of his monk’s robe.
H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche’s legendary life and accomplishments have been widely recorded, including in books such as Holy Cultivation and Its Marvelous Fruits and Biographies of Ten Major Disciples of Dharma Kings. In Tibet, particularly in the Amdo region, almost everyone knows of his miraculous deeds. His life stands as a beacon of inspiration and a model of Dharma practice in this world of five defilements.
Upon reading A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma, H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche immediately recognized H.H. Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu as the primordial Dorje Chang Buddha, the highest Buddha in Buddhism. His realization corroborated the recognition of other great holy dharma kings. H.E. Xiazhu Choying Rinpoche offered his heartfelt congratulations in a respectful letter, further acknowledging the sacred truth.
To the Most Revered and Holiest Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Dharma King:
I have learned that A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma, is a sacred text about His Holiness, the supreme and most honored H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, is soon to be distributed worldwide. This book contains the highest, authentic Dharma that brings immense benefit to all sentient beings.
Master Dodrupchen, who is universally recognized as the second Guru Padmasambhava and the highest holy being within Tibetan esoteric Buddhism, expressed his astonishment in his formal congratulations. He praised the accomplishments of the Holiest Wan Ko Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Dharma King as truly extraordinary—unimaginable and miraculous, transcending the ordinary. These achievements express both the describable and indescribable absolute truth of the Buddha-Dharma.
We shall proclaim and praise the accomplishments of His Holiness throughout the Dharma realm. We express our deepest gratitude to His Holiness, the ancient Buddha, for His boundless and great compassion in coming to this world once again to benefit all sentient beings!

Tantra is the secret or esoteric part of Buddhist practice. It is often referred to as the vajrayana or Diamond Path. It is also used as a term for the secret scriptures or esoteric writings. Although it includes the highest dharma within the Buddha-dharma, you should not consider it to be superior or that the exoteric Buddhism practiced by other sects should be considered a low level of dharma. The Buddha-dharma is not divided into high and low as comparisons. All 84,000 dharma methods came into being in response to the different innate faculties of living beings. The Buddha-dharma has only one truth no matter how it is expressed.
Exoteric Buddhism and vajrayana Buddhism are not two separate schools. Exoteric Buddhism is half of a dharma system. True vajrayana Buddhism includes the teachings of the various schools of exoteric Buddhism plus mantras, mudras, visualization, mandala offerings practiced either as a group or alone, and inner and outer tantric initiations. It includes a foundation in the cultivation of the “dharmakaya” from exoteric buddhism as well as the more advanced cultivation of the “sambhogakaya” and the “nirmanakaya.” In vajrayana or tantric practice one strives to realize all three kayas in one lifetime. However, this is ONLY possible if one is able to follow a true vajra master and receive authentic inner tantric initiation.

True esoteric Buddhism includes all the teachings of the exoteric schools as well as the secret teachings and practices. There are those who claim to be esoteric teachers who can only offer intricate hand movements or mudras, chant mantras, make mandala offerings, or lead the disciple through elaborate visualizations, but who teach or know little of the exoteric sutras. This is not true esoteric Buddhism. Without the foundation in the essential doctrine of the Buddha as found in the Tripitaka, one should not even do the esoteric practices, let alone teach them. That is why the authentic temples which has holly masters teach meditation practices from the Theravadan and Zen or Ch’an Schools, along with certain Pure Land Practices and those of the Hua-yen and Fa-hsiang Schools and others as well as the esoteric methods. Disciples are taught according to their particular karmic affinity with the dharma.
Sometimes these exoteric techniques are taught concurrently with certain esoteric or tantric practices and sometimes they must be mastered prior to introduction to tantra. Not all students are able to receive tantra, which in its highest forms can bring liberation in this lifetime. However, everyone can progress and reach high levels of achievement, according to their efforts and karma. All of the teachings of our temples are to lead beings to liberation from the suffering of the cycle of life and death. That is the only purpose in practicing Buddhism! This is an important point!
Those who learn exoteric Buddhism exclusively are learning only the foundational aspect (some of the theoretical or doctrinal part) of Buddhism. The esoteric vehicle contains the lessor vehicle teachings AND the complete and unsurpassed mahayana teachings of both exoteric and the esoteric Buddhism AND the esoteric practices and rituals.
Tantric initiation is a ceremony within vajrayana Buddhism whereby dharma is transmitted according to tantra by means of a master’s limitless merit and power. During the ceremony, the master visualizes that he or she becomes one with a Buddha or Bodhisattva. During this ceremony the disciple is empowered by the master to carry out specific meditation practices. The student is ritually entered into a mandala of a particular tantric deity by his or her vajra master. He or she is thus empowered to practice the spiritual practices (sadhana) or associated mantras, mudras, and visualization of that deity.
There are three classes of initiation: Outer-tantric initiations, inner-tantric initiations and secret or supreme-tantric initiations (also called “holy” initiations). Each of these three classes is further divided into various dharma methods. During the highest and greatest inner-tantra and secret-tantra initiations there must be supernormal states that are manifested in front of the disciple at the Buddhist altar area (mandala). These miraculous states must be in accordance with the Tibetan tantra laid down by the Buddhas. The disciple is actually turned over to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas during these initiations. You must remember that unless you personally see the manifestation of supernatural dharma powers, then you have not received an inner-tantric initiation. Most initiations given today are outer-tantra initiations. The supreme or holy initiations are rarely given with very few masters having the ability to perform this type of practice. Vajra masters must undergo certain tests that demonstrate their level of realization to be able to perform this type of ceremony.
Transmission of the greatest dharma requires true nectar during the initiation. For example, the highest dharma within vajrayana Buddhism, the initiation of Ati-yoga, Great Perfection of the Vajra division, requires nectar as an indispensable holy element for cleansing one’s negative karma and is the resource for planting the “Seeds of Vajra.” Other forms of inner trantric initiations can also eliminate karmic obstructions. Disciples can deeply penetrate into the dharma through inner-tantra initiations.
One must have accumulated considerable merit from past practices and good deeds to be able to receive tantra. There are certain preliminary practices that must be performed which can vary depending on the karma of the disciple. There are exceptions possible for 1) those who have completed these steps in a past life; 2) those with exceptional merit due to extraordinary offerings or actions in this life; and 3) through the grace of the guru.
Tantra requires the initiation or empowerment of a qualified teacher or master who provides specialized teachings, rituals, and practices to enable the disciple to root out or eliminate the dark side of his/her psyche and thus become like the Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. Supernormal powers are viewed as the natural outcome of realization and are used by qualified teachers. However, ordinary disciples are not allowed to discuss or display their supernormal powers. Only very highly evolved Bodhisattvas and Buddhas dare to display such powers and then only to help living beings. A person seeking initiation must demonstrate an understanding of emptiness, exhibit high moral conduct, and have developed an altruistic desire to help all beings. Any empowerment will have limited impact without a proper foundation of preliminary practices or Prayogas. It recognizes that supernormal powers cannot be given to one who has not eliminated the negative aspects of the self.
Today as in times past, the highest tantric teachings and practices are only transmitted orally and are held in great secrecy between the teacher and the disciple. Because of the power of these teachings, it is recognized that the student must be thoroughly prepared to receive them. A true master will usually test a disciple for six to twelve years or longer before transmitting the higher teachings.
Recently I have gotten a special pill from a Dharma Assembly at Hua Zang Si Temple in San Francisco. The pill was made through Buddha-dharma, and is capable of curing illnesses. And I was even more fortunate that I had a opportunity to watch a video about how these pills were made. The whole process was so incredible and astonishing.
There are two types of the healing pills. The one is made from conducting a dharma with the Medicine Buddha as the yidam and using the practice of tummo as the cause, it is called the Daba Buqiong Pill. Another kind made from a dharma with the Kuan Si Yin Bodhisattva, one of the five great Buddha Mothers, as the yidam is named the Kazhuo Ande Pill (also called the Black Jewel Medicine Pill). These pills are made by two types of methods, the highest or most magnificent way or worldly ways. In today’s Buddhism world, worldly ways are commonly used. The process is basically mixing all and only the required ingredients of medicine that are blessed by chanting the mantra of the dharma and then rubbing the mixture into pills. The magnificent inner tantric way of making these pills is completely different. The practice of tummo concentration must be used as the affinity of the dharma. The ingredients of the medicine are exactly the same. The blessing power of the pills is supreme and most magnificent. However, because of the loss of Buddha -dharma, the process of making these pills with the most magnificent (non-worldly) methods has almost become extinct.
The pills of Daba Buqiong and Kazhuo Ande made from the magnificent method are rare and hard to obtain. The first difficulty is that it is hard to find a true great virtuous one to conduct tummo concentration.
Many people have heard about the dharma of tummo concentration but it is extremely difficult to see a true manifestation of tummo power. Today, in Tibet, India and other places, there are still many lamas who practice tummo concentration. However, when they walk out of the closed room at the end of the extended practice in seclusion, very few of them can actually raise their body temperature. The most they were able to do is symbolically wear a wet blanket while walking around the temple. Those who attained such initial level are now called holy and venerable ones. This is just an indication that tantric dharmas are being lost from generation to generation.
Tummo concentration is a high-class Buddha-dharma of meditation. It is a rare holy dharma indispensable for cultivating the life power of the body, mind-wind and bright spot, and the accomplishment of a rainbow-light body. Regardless of what illness or disease one has, practicing tummo can eliminate it completely. Therefore, this dharma is the dead enemy of the demon of illness. Tummo concentration is a great dharma in the division of supreme yoga. The perfect accomplishment in the practice of this dharma combined with Vajra Body Substitution Meditation can lead to the accomplishment of becoming a Bodhisattva at the twelfth stage or higher.
There are two types of practices of tummo concentration. One is Yoga Tummo from Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism. The other is the Corpse-Laying Tummo regarded as “the King of Tummo.” When practicing tummo, the higher the body temperature can be raised to, the higher the realization power of the practitioner. The normal body temperature of humans is between 98.6°F and 99.5°F (37°C and 37.5°C). When the body temperature reaches a level between 104°F and 105.8°F (40°C and 41°C), one is regarded as having a high fever. A temperature above 41°C (about 106°F) can cause danger to one’s life. However, practitioners of tummo concentration can attain much higher temperatures than that.
The realization power from tummo concentration is defined by four steps. The first step is called the Initial Warmth Step. At this step, body temperature can be raised to between 115°F and 130°F but the ability of curing illnesses is not strong yet. The second step is the Joy of Heat from Meditation Step, with the body temperature raised to between 130°F and 150°F. The heat of tummo can be released at certain locations of the body to provide a relatively strong ability of curing illnesses. However, there are five illnesses that cannot be cured by this ability. Anyway, one will rarely become ill with the accomplishment at this step. The third step is the Step of Emptiness and Existence at High Temperature. The body temperature can be raised to between 150°F and 200°F. The heat of tummo can be distributed to any part of the body to heal illness by oneself, with the exception of two illnesses. The practitioner can collect the dark karma generated daily due to ignorance and burn it away with tummo. One can also move the heat of tummo outside of his body to cure illness and eliminate hindrance for other people or to subdue demons and evil spirits. The fourth step is the magnificent Delight at Extreme Temperature. The temperature will exceed 200°F and the heat of tummo will spread to the entire body. Master Milerapa used his realization power of this step to ignite his own body to attain the accomplishment of sambhogakaya, and nirmanakaya.
Although the true realization power of tummo is hard to find through the history of over one thousand years, fortunately Mozhi Rinpoches, a disciple of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, is a great yoga master. He is the first-place master of tummo concentration in Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism. His body weight was reduced from 241.4 pounds (109.5 kg) to 124.6 pounds (56.5 kg) by practicing tummo concentration. He once practiced tummo concentration for seven months and three days, without eating and drinking. After that, all illnesses were eliminated.
The video I watched was the recording of The dharma assembly of making the pills of Kazhuo Ande. It was held at Los Angeles at year 2009. In the dharma assembly, Mozhi JiaoZun was the chief master to produce the heat of tummo. Other rinpoches would be his dharma-protecting assistants. He stated that the purpose of his coming here was not to compare his realization power with others and was not for making Kazhuo Ande pills. It was a coincidence that he met this cause. He regards it as his duty to do something for living beings.

At the dharma assembly, Mozhi Rinpoche lay on the dharma board and had his head covered up so people would not know who was practicing tummo concentration. This great holy virtuous one with true realization of power and abilities never wanted to boast or praise himself. Everyone attending the dharma assembly was greatly moved and felt ashamed by such holy and pure style of humble self-cultivation.
When the great holy virtuous one was conducting the dharma, a porcelain pot for frying the medicine was laid on his belly. The high-temperature heat of tummo was strong and vicious and directly penetrated the thick porcelain pot. Rinpoches who used a finger to test the temperature were all scalded badly. They had to throw the medicine powder into the pot and get away quickly to protect their fingers from getting injured.
At the dharma assembly of making pills with the magnificent method, the heat from the Body-Laying (Corpse Pose) Tummo Concentration scalded rinpoches’ fingers so that they were red and swollen. Some had frowning eyebrows and were sweating all over their heads. Some had blisters form on their fingers. Some had the color of the swollen finger turned into white or black colors. Some had their whole finger scalded red and unable to bend. Some even had their face scorched red by the high heat of tummo.
