The Profound Wisdom of the Holy Buddha Vimalakirti

The Vimalakirti Sutra stands as one of the most profound texts in Mahayana Buddhism, offering deep insight into wisdom, compassion, and the nature of illness. One of its most significant sections, the “Chapter on Illness,” presents a powerful dialogue between Manjushri and Vimalakirti, a lay Bodhisattva of extraordinary realization.

Vimalakirti, despite his unparalleled wisdom, feigns illness to teach a vital lesson. When Manjushri visits him and asks, “Aren’t you successful in your practice? If so, how can you be ill?” Vimalakirti responds, “I am ill because all sentient beings are ill.” This response redefines illness—not as a personal affliction but as an expression of universal suffering. His illness is a manifestation of his boundless compassion, mirroring the pain of all beings so that he may guide them toward liberation.

The dialogue between Vimalakirti and Manjushri unfolds into a deeper contemplation on suffering. When asked when his illness will be cured, Vimalakirti replies, “When the last sentient being is free from illness, then my illness will be cured.” This statement embodies the heart of Mahayana Buddhism—the vow to attain enlightenment not for oneself alone but for all beings. His words resonate with the self-sacrificial love found in other spiritual traditions, such as Jesus Christ’s willingness to bear humanity’s suffering.

Vimalakirti further explains, “From ignorance comes love, and thus my illness arises.” He reveals that suffering stems from attachment—attachment to family, possessions, ambitions, and even spiritual practice. Such attachments cloud the mind, giving rise to suffering. True liberation, he teaches, comes from transcending these attachments through wisdom and compassion.

The holy and venerable Vimalakirti is unique in Buddhist history, as he was an ancient Buddha who chose to manifest as a layperson rather than an ordained monk. During the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, he played a crucial role in teaching monastics and Bodhisattvas who struggled to develop Mahayana bodhicitta. His unparalleled wisdom and skillful means helped bridge the gap between monastic and lay practitioners, proving that profound realization is not limited to those in monastic robes.

In reality, Vimalakirti was the incarnation of the supreme Buddha Dorje Chang (Vajradhara), the primordial Buddha and master of all Buddhas. Yet, instead of taking a leadership role that might have caused sectarian divisions, he humbly chose to serve as a Bodhisattva assisting Shakyamuni Buddha. His teachings, recorded in the Vimalakirti-nirdesa Sutra, are regarded as sutras in their own right, carrying the weight of authentic Buddha-dharma.

The depth of Vimalakirti’s wisdom was so vast that even the most accomplished Bodhisattvas hesitated to engage him in dialogue. When Shakyamuni Buddha asked Maitreya Bodhisattva to inquire about Vimalakirti’s health, Maitreya declined, admitting that Vimalakirti had once humbled him with his superior insight. Ultimately, only Manjushri, the ancient Buddha and master of the seven Buddhas, dared to engage Vimalakirti in discourse.

Vimalakirti’s teachings were not limited to words alone—he also demonstrated his supreme realization through extraordinary miracles. In one instance, he used his boundless supernatural powers to bring the entire Buddha-land of Abhirati, including the Immovable Buddha (Aksobhya), into the human realm. Even the Immovable Buddha himself declared, “I did not do this; it was through the supernatural powers of Vimalakirti.” Such feats reveal that Vimalakirti’s realization surpassed that of all Bodhisattvas and was equal to that of Shakyamuni Buddha himself.

Shakyamuni Buddha himself affirmed the extraordinary status of Vimalakirti, stating, “One who makes offerings to that holy being should know that this is making offerings to the Buddhas. One who transcribes this sutra or keeps it in a room should know that the Tathagata exists in that room.” These words confirm that Vimalakirti was, in essence, a Buddha.

His teachings continue to inspire practitioners today, offering a profound perspective on suffering, wisdom, and compassion. His willingness to manifest illness as a teaching tool, his unparalleled debates with great Bodhisattvas, and his supernatural demonstrations all serve as timeless lessons in the path to enlightenment.

I have never  been aware of or seen anyone who surpassed the accomplishments of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

I follow  H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and have ever since I first encountered His writings in an unusual little book titled True Stories About a Holy Monk thirteen years ago. Prior to that I studied and practiced Zen Buddhism and the shamanic arts for over fifteen years.

Although I knew this was an extraordinary teacher and holy person, none of us who followed this holy being knew who He was until a draft manuscript of a book about His accomplishments in this life was published and distributed to many of the leading Buddhist living in the world at that time. This happened around 2007. Many of the most highest accomplished Buddhist (not all were the most well known) recognized that this was a very special incarnation and wrote letters stating that fact which were included in the final version of the book that was published and presented to the Library of Congress and the world in a grand ceremony in April, 2008. Later that year and the next, I and a group of monks, nuns, and laypeople voluntarily traveled to all 50 states presenting the book to governors, librarians, tribal chiefs, and others and giving a talk on just who H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is and why He had come to America. Many of the current Buddhist sects hold that Dorje Chang Buddha or Vajradhara Buddha was the originator of Buddhism as such. This is especially true in the vajrayana traditions. You will see this dark blue Buddha at the top of their lineage trees. Dorje Chang Buddha was the first samboghakaya manifestation of the formless Dharmakaya Buddha and was the teacher of all dharma to all the other Buddhas in the ten directions including Shakyamuni Buddha. Only one other time did Dorje Chang Buddha incarnate in this world and that was at the time of Shakyamuni Buddha to help teach Shakyamuni Buddha’s disciples. That was as the great holy venerable one, Honorable Vimalakirti. At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha praised Honorable Vimalakirti in the Vimalakirti-Nirdesa Sutra, ”People who make offerings to this person should know that they are making offerings to a Buddha. One who transcribes and learns this sutra should know that a Tathagata is right with him in the same room.” This statement means that, in addition to Shakyamuni Buddha, there was another Tathagata in this world at that time. Shakyamuni Buddha was not the only Buddha. You can read the teachings of Ven. Vimalakirti in the well-known sutra bearing His name. However,  H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III gave us this discourse, “The dharma I transmit is absolutely the dharma taught by the Buddha. However, I am not a Buddha. Neither am I a master. I am just a humble one propagating the true dharma of Tathagata, without distinguishing sects or schools. Any cultivator who has correct knowledge and views, even a very ordinary cultivator, is better than me. I should learn from them all. Therefore, my body, speech, and mind are just a humble structure.”

In 2008, I had the good fortune to have an interview in upstate New York with H.H. Penor Rinpoche, who had been the  third supreme leader of the Nyingma Sect. He was one of the leaders who recognized H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. He told me that this was a very high being, much higher than he (Penor) was and it was very good that such a being should incarnate at this time in these dharma ending days and that He should reveal many miracles so that people would believe that the dharma still existed in this world. He also said that Dorje Chang had never before incarnated in Tibet and other wonderful things.

The fact is that H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s mind practice is different from that of all other dharma kings, rinpoches, and dharma masters in the world. For example, He is truly completely proficient in exoteric and esoteric Buddhism and possesses perfect mastery of the five vidyas, while essentially no other people were able to accomplish that through history. More importantly, He is the only one who only benefits and helps all others and does not accept money or properties from other people. He has even announced that He would never accept offerings and would solely benefit others. Consequently, this fact causes other dharma kings, rinpoches, and great dharma masters of Buddhism to feel very embarrassed and depressed, because all these dharma kings, rinpoches, and dharma masters have to collect and accept offerings. Compared to H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s deed of not accepting offerings, it became clear that they are at lower levels and are greedy for offerings from living beings. Therefore, they are very angry because H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III ’s deed makes them unable to explain their acts.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III did NOT proclaim himself to be a Buddha. However, He was recognized by many others as such and He did not deny the fact. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has stated repeatedly that this is the era of Shakyamuni Buddha and that Shakyamuni Buddha is the supreme leader of Buddhism in the world today. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III only came to correct many of the mistranslations and erroneous views held by Buddhists and about Buddhism that exist in the world today. He has demonstrated countless accomplishments in all five of the vidyas–the only way that a Buddha can be known. The five vidyas is an ancient concept that most Buddhist do not understand–I know I did not and it took me a long time to fully realize what was meant by the term.

Based on what I have seen and experienced, I do believe H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is a nirmanakaya Buddha.  Please allow me to make a statement from the bottom of my heart that bears my responsibility to the law of cause and effect: From what I have learned from books and what I have ever seen in my current lifetime, I have never  been aware of or seen anyone who surpassed the accomplishments of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III!

YIDAM-DHARMA INITIATION MASTER OF THE 17TH KARMAPA: H.E. DHARMA KING GONGBAO DUMU QUJI

H.E. Dharma King Dumu Quji was conferred the title of “Buddha-Dharma National Master” by an emperor in the Ming Dynasty. The meaning of “Quji” is Dharma King. H.E. Dharma King Gongbao Dumu Quji XVIII is the Vajra Master of H.H. the 17 th Karmapa Great Jewel Dharma King. He performed the yidam dharma initiation for the 17 th Karmapa Great Jewel Dharma King. He is the only one of great holiness and virtue who cleansed through a ritual bathing the 17 th Karmapa and formally put the Great Jewel Dharma King robes onto the 17 th Karmapa. He did so at the respectful request of H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche, who is one of the four great Dharma Princes. During the time H.H. Dharma King Gongbao Dumu Quji XVIII performed initiations for the Karmapa, he saw in a supernatural state the ancient, primordial Buddha—Dorje Chang Buddha—bless the Karmapa. That ancient Buddha manifested as H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. H.H. Dharma King Gongbao Dumu Quji XVIII wrote the following about this real experience: “H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is the highest refuge countless living beings can rely upon to attain liberation. I prostrate to H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.”

In this lifetime, I formally put the Great Jewel Dharma King robes on to the 17th Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorje, and performed the yidam dharma initiation for him, which included transmitting dharma to him. A few days before I did that, I saw in a supernatural state the Buddha Vajradhara appear over the head of the Karmapa. The Buddha Vajradhara was radiating light that empowered the Karmapa. Very soon after that, the Buddha Vajradhara metamorphosed into one who was sitting down. He was wearing a yellow robe. His long hair was at shoulder level, and He looked dignified and imposing. Behind Him were high stones, a pool, rooms, red flowers, and green pines. Below Him was a wooden deck. At that time, I knew Dorje Chang Buddha had come to this world, but I did not see His exact whereabouts. During all these many years, I have constantly kept that scene in mind and have reviewed it.

I recently received the book H.H.  Dorje Chang Buddha III. This was probably the result of being blessed by the twenty-one Taras. When I turned to page twenty-one and saw that holy image of H.H.  Dorje Chang Buddha III, I was totally shocked. It was the exact image of Dorje Chang Buddha that I saw in that supernatural state. There was not the slightest difference between the two, including the setting that surrounded H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.

I now solemnly affirm and offer congratulations for the following: The karmic conditions of living beings to encounter dharma have matured, for they can now benefit from the brilliant wisdom of the Buddha as they had wished. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is a precious book of true Buddha-dharma, a treasury that incorporates 84,000 dharma methods. It demonstrates accomplishments in the Five Vidyas unprecedented in the history of Buddhism. H.H. Brief Introduction of H.E. Dharma King Dumu Quji

In the Tibetan region of Kham, the renowned 18th Do Mu Choktrul Rinpoche is a household name, widely revered for his immense compassion and kindness. Do Mu Rinpoche was born in 1945 in Palwug Village, near Babang Monastery in present-day Dege County, Sichuan Province, historically part of the Dege royal domain. His father, Chodro Yeshe Gyatso, was a prominent member of the Lukra Tsang family within the Dege royal lineage, and his mother, Genkyu Chudron, was the daughter of a key minister from the esteemed Lujang family of the Dege kingdom.

Before Rinpoche’s birth, his mother experienced an extraordinary vision: a bird appeared before her and presented her with a wisdom sword associated with Manjushri Bodhisattva. At the time of his birth, the household was bathed in an extraordinary radiance and auspicious energy. Remarkably, a bucket of milk in the home transformed into butter, and flowers bloomed profusely on the ground outside—a truly miraculous event.

At the age of three, the reincarnation search team from Dhonka Monastery identified him as the reincarnation of the previous Do Mu Choktrul Rinpoche. This recognition was later confirmed by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje, who bestowed upon him the name Karma Shedrup Trinley Tenzin Palzangpo and granted him the empowerments of Amitayus and other teachings.

That same year, Rinpoche was ceremonially enthroned at Dhonka Monastery in a grand ceremony presided over by the 9th Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and the 8th Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche. Following his enthronement, he began rigorous and specialized training under the guidance of dedicated spiritual masters.

In 1980, following the restoration of religious freedoms in China, Buddhist activities were officially permitted to resume.

In 1981, under Rinpoche’s leadership, Dhonka Monastery embarked on its reconstruction. Despite numerous challenges, the monastery was gradually restored to its former glory. Rinpoche personally led meditation retreats, upheld strict monastic discipline, delivered Dharma teachings, performed empowerments, and presided over Buddhist assemblies. His boundless compassion and tireless efforts brought immeasurable benefit to countless beings.

Throughout his life, Rinpoche’s Dharma activities remained uninterrupted, regardless of war or societal changes. Guided by profound wisdom and deep compassion, he tirelessly propagated the Buddha’s teachings across the Tibetan regions. Responding to requests from devotees in various areas, he traveled to remote mountain regions, often under arduous conditions, to conduct ordination ceremonies and share the Dharma. His footprints spanned the entirety of Kham and Tibet.

In recent years, auspicious connections enabled Han Chinese disciples to learn from Rinpoche as well. Cities such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Huizhou became destinations for a steady stream of seekers coming to receive his teachings. Through his tireless efforts, Rinpoche brought the nectar of Dharma to both Han and Tibetan communities, profoundly benefiting countless beings.

Rinpoche exemplified the principle, “The Dharma exists in the world to awaken beings within it.” His compassionate wisdom was evident in numerous achievements, including the completion of Dhonka Monastery’s reconstruction, the establishment of retreat centers, the founding of Buddhist academies, the opening of nunneries, the initiation of charitable organizations, and the creation of the Karma Kagyu Research Institute. These efforts expanded the reach of Buddhism, integrating it into all aspects of life.

In addition to his spiritual leadership, Rinpoche also served as a government official, promoting the dissemination and practical application of Humanistic Buddhism. Through his work, he ensured that the teachings of the Dharma became an integral part of daily life, guiding people to treat one another with compassion, wisdom, and kindness.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO H.H. DHARMA KING TRULSHIK

H.H. Dharma King Kyabje Trulshik Chokyi Lodro is one of the most accomplished masters of the Nyingma sect in the present age. He is also one of the few remaining great masters of Tibetan Buddhism who has real and extensive knowledge, real training, and true cultivation. He is a lineage holder of many important dharma lineages. He is a great dharma king who does not distinguish among the various sects of Buddhism. H.H. Dharma King Trulshik and the most magnificent modern dharma kings of Buddhism, such as the H.H. Dudjom Dharma King and H.H. Dharma King Dilgo Khyentse, have been masters and disciples of one another. H.H. Dharma King Trulshik also taught the dharma of many lineages to the 16th Karmapa. He is a personal master of H.H. the Dalai Lama as well as a master of the most recent reincarnation of the H.H. Dudjom Dharma King, H.H. Dharma King Dilgo Khyentse, and H.E. Dharma King Tulku Ugyen.

Many Rinpoches had different views concerning which great Bodhisattva H.H. Dharma King Trulshik was the incarnation of. Thus, the International Buddhism Sangha Association held an unprecedented Drawing Lots From a Golden Vase Ceremony to affirm the true reincarnated identity of H.H. Dharma King Trulshik and others. There were ten possible identities recognized by various rinpoches. One lot was drawn from among 120 lots to affirm the true reincarnated identity of H.H. Dharma King Trulshik. That drawing affirmed that H.H. Dharma King Trulshik is the nirmanakaya of Maitreya Bodhisattva, which is the reincarnated identity that H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III recognized before that lot was drawn.

In history, H.H. Dharma King Trulshik incarnated as Thonmi Sambhota, who created the Tibetan written language. Later, he incarnated as the great translation master Bairotsana, who was one of the twenty-five major disciples of Guru Padmasambhava. H.H. Dharma King Trulshik will be the next Buddha of this Good Eon (Bhadra-kalpa) of one thousand Buddhas. At that time, all of his disciples who heard him expound the Buddha-dharma will attain accomplishment in the dharma.

The dharma king was born on September 10, 1924, the year of the wooden rat, which was the exact birthday of Guru Padmasambhava. He was born in Wengre Cave, which is a holy place of cultivation in southern Tibet. Many auspicious phenomena appeared at the time of his birth. The father of the dharma king, Dianjin Queda, was a practitioner of yoga. His mother, Jiangyang Wangmu, was a descendent of Zhangba Jialei, who was the first Drukpa Dharma King and founder of the magnificent Drukpa lineage.

The dharma king was extraordinary ever since childhood, especially with respect to his deep self-cultivation. When he was four years old, his master, Zhachu Rinpoche (who was a disciple H.H. Dharma King Trulshik personally taught in his previous life as Trulshik Dongak Lingpa), invited him to the Zhalongpu Monastery in the Latuo Xueka District. At that time and place, memories of his prior life spontaneously welled up in the mind of the dharma king. He recounted in detail past events of that prior lifetime. Zhachu Rinpoche had personally witnessed those past events of his former master. Zhachu Rinpoche wept as he orally corroborated each of those events without exception. Zhachu Rinpoche was truly astonished by this and firmly believed that this boy must be the incarnation of Trulshik Dongak Lingpa. After the rinpoche practiced the Selection of Karmic Affinity Dharma, he affirmed that the boy was undoubtedly the incarnation of Trulshik Dongak Lingpa.

At the Mindrolling Monastery, the dharma king engaged in extensive learning. He received all of the monk precepts from his precept masters Cuikenqiong Rinpoche and Mindrolling Kenqian Khyentse Norbu according to the “Formal Pronouncement on Precepts” lineage passed down from Laqian Qianba Lasa. Present-day dharma kings unanimously agree that H.H. Dharma King Trulshik is one of the most important lineage-holders of this lineage. H.H. Dharma King Trulshik holds three types of precepts that are on different levels: the Pratimoksa precepts, the Bodhisattva precepts, and the precepts for tantric masters. The dharma king is one who truly wears a golden precept robe. Not only does he abide by the precepts for monks, he also completely abides by all of the Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana precepts. That is why he deserves to be called a “holder of the Vajra Three Secrets Vows.” H.H. Dharma King Trulshik is the main transmitter of the monastic vows within the Nyingma lineage.

The dharma king has received teachings on the sutras and tantras, as well as other teachings. He has visited famous masters in many places to learn Buddha-dharma, including over thirty famous masters who belong to ancient and modern sects of esoteric Buddhism. The dharma king has studied all of the dharma teachings of these important lineages and has put them into practice. He still learns assiduously even after he completed a strict three-year retreat. Accepting the request of Zhachu Rinpoche, the dharma king became the khenpo of the Zhalong Dongga Qielin Monastery, where he is responsible for upholding, protecting, and spreading the dharma.

Throughout his whole life, the dharma king has wholeheartedly cultivated himself in retreat. Every day he abstains from speaking until 10:00 in the morning. Each year the dharma king goes into retreat in his own temple for as much as nine months. All of the great Tibetan rinpoches acknowledge that as a master of masters, the dharma king has the greatest abilities and power to clearly point out the way leading to realization of one’s original nature. That is why extremely virtuous masters send their capable disciples to the dharma king in order to seek teachings and empowerment.

H.H. Dharma King Trulshik has vast and profound learning. His practice is solid and flawless. He is unassuming and amiable. No one in today’s world can match his profound experience, training, and realization. Many practitioners of the various sects regard him as a venerable Dharma King Master with limitless wisdom and vast supernatural powers. H.H. Dharma King Trulshik has recognized the identities of the person who is the incarnation of H.H. Dharma King Dilgo Khyentse, the person who is the incarnation of H.E. Dharma King Tulku Ugyen, and persons who are incarnations of other important rinpoches. He has also transmitted dharma to and performed initiations for such people. The dharma king is a magnificent practitioner of the Great Perfection Dharma and a magnificent accomplished one in our current age. He is a model master of this century with disciples spread all over the world.

After H.H. Dharma King Trulshik saw who His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu is through the limitless omniscience displayed in A Treasury of True BuddhaDharma, he stated that His Holiness Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu has reached the highest state of Buddhahood in the few-thousand-year history of Buddhism, having truly attained complete. Dharma King Trulshik wrote a respectful congratulation letter.

I recently learned that the book about you, A Treasury of True BuddhaDharma, was published a long time ago. The content of that book includes
the traditional Tibetan five major vidyas and five minor vidyas. In terms of modern branches of learning, the book involves more than thirty different branches of learning. Thus, I entered samadhi and visualized the Three Jewels the Buddha, the dharma, and the sangha. I pervasively spread bodhicitta and
wished that all living beings would realize the supreme, absolute truth and
Buddhahood. May the propagation of A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma be
the karmic condition whereby living beings in the three spheres leave the sufferings of reincarnation and obtain the fruit of wonderful happiness. It will become the cause whereby each sentient being who has descended into the abyss of the six realms of reincarnation leaves suffering and attains happiness.

Currently, “Dragon Carp Frolicking in the Lotus Pond” is permanently displayed in the Master Artist Fish Hall at the  H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Cultural And Art Museum in Covina, California.

The Old Boat and the Journey Within: Lessons from the Buddha on Cultivation and Liberation

During the Buddha’s lifetime, there was a time when he was teaching on the far side of a river. Eager to hear his wisdom, many monks wished to cross the river, but there was only one boat available. The boatman warned them, “My boat is very old, and with so many of you on board, it could be dangerous!” Yet, in their eagerness to reach the Buddha, the monks ignored the boatman’s caution and all climbed aboard. Reluctantly, the boatman set sail.

As they reached the middle of the river, the monks noticed water seeping into the bottom of the boat, and panic began to spread. The boatman calmly said, “I told you this boat is old, but you didn’t listen. Now, if you can’t stay calm, the boat will sink even faster.”

Upon hearing this, the monks stilled themselves and did not dare move. Thankfully, the boatman’s experience guided them safely to the other shore.

When the monks arrived and recounted the incident to the Buddha, he offered this teaching: “When you were in the boat, you feared for your safety. But in daily life, you fail to realize that danger is ever-present. Many people worry about the uncertainty of the future, yet neglect the most important thing — being mindful of the present moment. Focus on this life, this moment. Pay attention to your thoughts and purify your mind of the five poisons: greed, anger, ignorance, pride, and doubt.”

The Buddha continued, “Our bodies are like that old, leaky boat. We must reduce its burden, and the heaviest load is the weight of greed, anger, ignorance, pride, and doubt. Just like in the boat, if we don’t repair our minds and lighten our burdens, we risk sinking. Only by addressing these burdens can we safely reach the other shore.”

“Do not be preoccupied with the thought of being reborn in the Western Pure Land in your next life. Instead, focus on your present condition. Are you free from afflictions in this very moment? Do you act with an open heart? Can you humble yourself in the eyes of others? These are the true questions we must face in life.”

The contemporary Buddha H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III  has also imparted timeless wisdom on cultivation. His Holiness teaches that true cultivation stems from the depths of your heart, from your bodhicitta — the awakened mind of compassion. Be genuinely friendly and loving to your spouse, your brothers, and your sisters. Foster harmony with your friends, act cooperatively with others, and extend care and help to all sentient beings. Apply the Four Limitless States of Mind — loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity — and cultivate bodhicitta in every action. Constantly reflect on yourself: How do you treat others with your words? With your thoughts? With your actions?

The conduct of Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas is marked by complete disregard for personal gain. When interests conflict, they give way to others, willingly taking fewer benefits or even none. You must remind yourself, “When others harm or slander me, I will not be disturbed. Even to those who harm me, I will wish them well, sincerely hoping for their happiness. Furthermore, I will take practical steps to help them, even offering financial aid — without letting them know that I am doing so.”

By living in accordance with these teachings, we become holy ones at the causal stage. Without a doubt, such cultivation leads to the perfection of wisdom and virtue. Achieving liberation and accomplishment becomes as simple as turning over one’s hand!

“Monks, I will teach you about the nature of a person without integrity and a person with integrity. Listen carefully and pay close attention.”

“Yes, Lord,” the monks replied in unison.

The Blessed One began, “What defines a person without integrity? Such a person is ungrateful and unthankful. This ingratitude and lack of thankfulness are characteristics of rude individuals and belong entirely to those without integrity. These individuals fail to recognize and appreciate the good done to them by others. They are driven by selfish desires and a sense of entitlement, neglecting the virtue of gratitude, which is the foundation of a harmonious and compassionate society.

“In contrast, a person with integrity is grateful and thankful. This gratitude and thankfulness are traits of civilized individuals and belong entirely to those with integrity. They recognize the value of the kindness and support they receive from others and make it a point to express their appreciation. Such individuals foster positive relationships and contribute to a community where mutual respect and support flourish.

“Monks, there are two people who are difficult to repay. Who are they? Your mother and father. Even if you were to carry your mother on one shoulder and your father on the other for 100 years, attending to their needs by anointing, massaging, bathing, and rubbing their limbs, even if they were to defecate and urinate right there on your shoulders, you still would not have repaid them. If you were to establish them in absolute sovereignty over this great earth, filled with the seven treasures, you still would not have repaid them.


“Why is that? Because parents do much for their children. They care for them, nourish them, and introduce them to this world. From the moment of birth, parents make countless sacrifices, enduring sleepless nights and countless worries to ensure their child’s well-being. They provide food, shelter, education, and unconditional love, guiding their children through the complexities of life. These acts of love and devotion create a debt that is immeasurable.

“However, monks, the greatest way to repay one’s parents is not through material means or physical care alone. True repayment comes from leading them towards the path of virtue and wisdom. If someone inspires his unbelieving mother and father to have faith, guides his unvirtuous parents towards virtue, encourages his stingy parents to be generous, and leads his foolish parents to wisdom, then, to that extent, he has repaid his mother and father.

“Consider the transformative power of such actions. When you rouse your unbelieving parents to embrace faith, you open their hearts to a greater understanding of life’s purpose. By encouraging them to practice virtue, you help them cultivate qualities that bring inner peace and happiness. Inspiring them to be generous allows them to experience the joy of giving, and guiding them towards wisdom leads them to a deeper comprehension of the world and their place in it.

“Monks, remember that integrity and gratitude are the cornerstones of a meaningful life. By embodying these virtues and helping others, especially your parents, to do the same, you contribute to a legacy of compassion and understanding that extends beyond your lifetime. This is the true measure of repayment and the highest expression of filial piety.”

The monks, deeply moved by the Blessed One’s words, reflected on the profound teachings and resolved to cultivate integrity and gratitude in their own lives, vowing to honor and repay their parents in the most meaningful way.

Exploring Tranquility: A Glimpse into an Ancient City Through Art

Spring Rain in the Ancient City

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s painting “Spring Rain in the Ancient City” creates a pure and exquisite inner world with extremely concise brushstrokes. Upon viewing it, one feels a sense of ethereal illusion, akin to gazing at the moon reflected in water, or the fresh and invigorating sound produced by pressing down a piano key. This artistry, which combines reality with the abstract and exudes a transcendent naturalness, enlightens the mind and often transports individuals to a realm of beauty and wonder.

With a stroke of the artist’s ingenious brush, the reality of the impermanent years and the philosophical insights contained within natural phenomena are presented on the canvas. The aesthetician, Zong Baihua, once said, “By focusing on the specifics of universal life, appreciating its colors, order, rhythm, and harmony, one glimpses the highest reflection of the self; transforming reality into the realm of the abstract, creating images as symbols, and concretizing the highest human spirit, embodying it physically – this is the realm of art.”

When admiring the Chinese painting “Spring Rain in the Ancient City,” my past painting ideas and perplexities suddenly melted away. The artistic conception in the artwork shook my inner being, and the marvelous composition deeply enlightened my mind. In the painting, a towering tree stands, firmly rooted and majestic, with branches reaching up to the sky. Through the spaces between the branches, one can see the lush greenery of trees lining the streets, exuding the freshness of spring. Above the canopy stretches the boundless sky, evoking the infinite implications of universal life. Beneath the crisscrossing branches lies the bustling city streets, where people hurry about their business. A sudden spring rain brings a new aesthetic perspective: under the vast sky, countless beings toil diligently in the wind and rain…

From the painting, we can observe that during that time in this ancient city, there weren’t many cars on the streets. People were either riding buses, bicycles, or walking. It portrays vivid, serene scenes, offering a soothing and comforting feeling to the heart.

This philosophical painting also reminds me of the verses from the poem “Nian Nu Jiao” by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III: “Abruptly entering the universe, The universe of a billion worlds, Stand firmly against all hardships and obstacles. Seeing through glory and riches, I simply smile. The rooster crows announcing the dawn, the morning bell hurries the moon, the whole Soha world is revealed everybody bustles about to survive,life, like smoke and snow, gone!….. “

The artist, with skillful brushstrokes and delicate ink, creates a realm that is subtle, almost mysterious. The shades of ink, varying in density and wetness, complement each other, resulting in a loose and unrestrained style, with a serene and unadorned visual essence. Whether in form, color, brushwork, or ink application, the painting breaks free from rigid constraints and embraces a sincere expression of artistic intention. Through subtle ink shades, it seeks to capture the essence beyond mere representation, embodying a style characterized by simplicity and refinement. There is no wild passion, no dramatic rhythm that sets the heart racing, and no dazzling colors. Even the composition seems to emerge effortlessly from the void. Everything is harmonious and natural, with the entire painting radiating a luminous brilliance, like jade coming to life.

This work skillfully combines the macro and micro perspectives. Through the delicate depiction of trees and leaves, it unfolds the vastness of the cosmos, as if to say, “Every stroke creates a marvelous realm.” This brushwork embodies profound Zen principles. Upon contemplation, the boundless wonders of the universe and life are revealed within this ethereal painting, inviting deep reflection.

The scenes depicted in the painting have long existed objectively within our familiar yet overlooked surroundings. The artist extracts them from everyday life and presents them anew, allowing us to view our own existence from a fresh perspective.

Just as when I first heard the violin concerto “Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai,” the moment the poignant melody gently flowed out, I was immediately moved by the unfamiliar yet familiar notes. The unforgettable melody seemed like a long-lost acquaintance, evoking excitement and beauty as if meeting an old friend in a dream. This sense of beauty seems to have always existed deep within our souls, waiting to be discovered. The artist perceives this beauty and presents it to people in an appropriate form. Perhaps this is a commonality among all great and extraordinary art in the world, which is why art history refers to this type of art as the ideal reality.

H.E. Dharma King Queji Jiangyang Qingzhen Arrives Flying through the Air

H.E. Queji Jiangyang Qingzhen was a disciple of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III who truly manifested realization. This Sakya rinpoche of great holiness had white hair and a youthful complexion. His silver beard extended below his belly, and a heavenly eye opened between his eyebrows. Through his practice he attained the state in which his whole body was semi transparent. Thus, his three channels and five chakras could be vaguely seen. He realized a state of true longevity equal to that of heaven. The rinpoche was able to fly through the air, coming and going anywhere with total ease and control.

When he received from H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III an inner-tantric initiation in the holy form called Drawing Lots From a Golden Vase, the lot landed upon the Xian Liang Great Perfection mandala. The Buddha Master transmitted to him the Lion Vajra Dharma and the highest great dharma called the Xian Liang Great Perfection Dharma. Right then and there H.E. Queji Jiangyang Qingzhen realized the rainbow-body perfection state.

Witnessing the Manifestation of Supernormal Power by H.E. Queji Jiangyang Qingzhen

One day, a gathering of highly virtuous laypersons and esteemed Rinpoches convened at the Pici Vajra Castle. Their purpose was to welcome the imminent arrival of H.E. Queji Jiangyang Qingzhen, a revered Dharma King and rinpoche of the Sayka sect, who, at more than one hundred years old, commanded great respect. In anticipation of his arrival, meticulous preparations had been made, including the arrangement of white silk hadas and offerings to honor him.

Shortly after midnight, at around 12:30, a wondrous phenomenon unfolded. A vibrant rainbow light appeared, encircling the sky, accompanied by celestial music. Gradually, the luminous rainbow expanded in size, descending gracefully until it settled atop the seven-story building housing our Buddhist altar. As the spectacle unfolded, a figure descended from above.

It was none other than H.E. Great Dharma King Jiangyang Qingzhen, gracing us with his presence.

We paid our respects and presented offerings to him with profound admiration, expressing our deepest reverence through our actions. While tales of centenarians ascending into the skies are often recounted in Tibetan scriptures, never before had we been blessed with the opportunity to witness such an extraordinary event firsthand. It was truly a manifestation of the boundless fortune we have accrued through countless lifetimes. How could one not be moved to tears by such a profound occurrence?

Truly, we stood assembled in the concrete courtyard below, with an uninterrupted view of the elder Dharma King’s descent from the sky to the rooftop. Although our sight was briefly obscured by the building’s roof, within moments, we beheld the elder Dharma King’s graceful descent from the top of the seven-story building to the ground below. His descent, with arms outstretched and legs slightly bent, resembled the elegant flight of an eagle—a spectacle beyond the capabilities of an ordinary person.

The following day, the Dharma King of the Sayka sect bestowed teachings upon us and initiated us, imbuing us with profound compassion. During the initiation ceremony, as we held a one-foot-long vajra in our hands, we experienced its boundless and awe-inspiring power, unable to control its movements. The ensuing mandala states were marvelously magnificent.

As the initiation ceremony drew to a close, the sound of ringing bells suddenly filled the air, and an attendant announced the arrival of ‘His Holiness the Great Master.’ In response, H.E. Dharma King Jiangyang Qingzhen promptly descended from his dharma seat and prostrated himself on the ground. Although we were initially uncertain about the significance of this auspicious moment, we followed suit, believing it might herald the arrival of Guru Padmasambhava. However, upon raising our heads, we beheld not Guru Padmasambhava but H.H. Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III). Sensing our confusion, H.E. Dharma King Jiangyang Qingzhen reassured us, declaring, “Do not harbor doubts. H.H. Master Yee is the illustrious Buddha Vajradhara Great Dharma King—His Holiness Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu Holiest Tathagata (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III).”

The Miraculous Events Experienced Around the Buddha

The Terrifying Adventure on Highway One from Los Angeles to San Francisco

Translated from the account recorded by Long Zhou Rinpoche

In the summer of 1998, I had the great honor and privilege of accompanying His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu Holiest Tathagata on a journey to propagate and spread the Buddha-dharma. We formed a large group and were driving along Highway One, the Pacific Coast Highway, towards San Francisco.

As our motorcade navigated the winding mountain roads, His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III instructed the driver to turn off the air conditioning and open the windows to let in the fresh air. The Buddha Master asked, “How do you like the air here compared to Los Angeles?” “Of course, the air here is better,” we all replied in unison. “Why?” asked the Buddha Master.Brother Chang, who holds a Master’s degree in chemical engineering, quickly responded, “Buddha Master, this is because in places with dense trees or close to the sea, the air contains a large amount of negative ions, which…” He began explaining the chemical properties. His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III patiently waited for him to finish and then asked, “What do negative ions look like?” We were all at a loss for words. The Buddha Master smiled but said nothing. A few minutes later, a ray of blue light suddenly entered the vehicle through the windshield, filling the air with a fresh and sweet scent. We were all left bewildered, not knowing what had just occurred. The Buddha Master turned to us and said, “Now do you know what negative ions look like? As practitioners, you cannot stay confined to theoretical discussions.”

When we reached the Big Sur area, we were captivated by the breathtaking views. Suddenly, the Buddha Master directed us to drive onto a small road and stop. He walked towards a pavilion near the cliff’s edge and told us solemnly, “Demons will come to disturb us soon. Let us all calm our minds and recite the Heart Mantra of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva without conversing or getting distracted.” At that moment, the sky was clear, and the sea was calm. Where would the demons come from? His Holiness gazed at the sky and performed mudras. Within minutes, strong winds began to blow, carrying sand and dust into the air, causing rocks to move. The tranquil sea turned into roaring waves, crashing against the shore, splashing as high as hundreds of feet. Even small rocks were thrown into the sky. It was a frightening scene. Witnessing this, we focused on our practice and recited the mantra loudly. Eventually, peace returned after His Holiness subdued the demons. He then imparted a teaching, “Among our group on this dharma propagation journey, there are rinpoches, great dharma teachers, and officers of the Institute and publishing house. Demons fear that the correct Buddha-dharma will benefit beings in the Western world, so they will do everything to obstruct us. However, there is no need to worry; the demons cannot harm you.”

Our journey continued into the night. The mountain roads were rugged, and it was dark. We sought a motel to stay for the night but faced difficulties finding one with available rooms. We even tried negotiating with the manager to let us stay in the lobby but were refused. We returned to the parking lot, feeling tired and cold. The temperature was around -2 degrees Celsius (29 degrees Fahrenheit).

His Holiness suddenly rolled down the window and warned us, “The demons are coming to harm you again. Quickly get into the vehicles and concentrate on reciting the mantra.” Before we could settle back into our seats, we heard eerie howls from the forest, drawing closer and closer.

We were chilled to the bone, our bodies shaking. At that moment, hunger and cold became insignificant as we focused solely on reciting the mantra. After a few minutes, we were startled by frantic knocking on the window. I looked out and saw His Holiness gesturing for me to come outside. He led me towards the forest, where he performed mudras towards dark shadows. “These shadows are demons. They are constantly seeking opportunities to attack us,” he explained. It took nearly half an hour to subdue the demons. By then, it was well past midnight, and His Holiness continued practicing dharma silently inside the vehicle. We still had not found a place to stay. Just as we were unsure of our next move, a Caucasian man approached us and kindly offered the use of his mansion. We were overjoyed and eventually arrived at the mansion after driving through the dark. Some of us prepared food in the kitchen, finding exactly fourteen sets of dinnerware and fourteen seats in the dining room—miraculously matching the number of people in our group. We were amazed by this inexplicable occurrence.

Early the next morning, we gathered on the mansion’s balcony, our fright and fatigue from the previous night vanished. The surrounding scenery was stunning, with valleys stretching endlessly and peaks surrounded by swirling clouds and mist. From east to west, the horizon was adorned with the silver light of the sea, waves crashing against the shore. As we enjoyed breakfast, we attributed our survival the previous night to the protection of dharma deities. His Holiness asked, “Is this what you disciples believe?”

Our journey continued, fraught with dangers and crises as demons continued to pursue us. Fortunately, under the protection of His Holiness, we faced and overcame these challenges each time. Normally, the journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco takes a day or less, but this time it took us seven days and seven nights. Even if I spent seven days and nights recounting His Holiness’s merit and holy deeds, it would not suffice. Therefore, I have composed the following poem to express my profound gratitude:

The Supreme Buddha Vajradhara of all sects, Honored one with boundless unimaginable merit; His Holiness expounds the esoteric scriptures of the Tathagata, With great compassion, benefiting all sentient beings.

The roars of the Vajra Lion shake the Three Spheres, Praised by holy and virtuous dharma kings; Guiding master of humans and celestial beings, Never hesitating to save the suffering.

The Buddha Master’s kindness is as grand as Mount Sumeru, I can never repay his boundless favors; I pray for His Holiness to remain in this world forever, Manifesting a sacred realm within samsara!
