The Pope of Buddhism His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III

The conferment of the Pope of Buddhism to His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III originated in January 2018 when the World Peace Prize Awarding Council and World Peace Prize Religious Leaders Title Awarding Council passed the resolution to confer to H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III the title of Pope of Buddhism, the highest leader of Buddhism in this world. However, His Holiness the Buddha refused to accept the conferment.

The Pope of Buddhism H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

For the sake of propagating Buddha Dharma and benefitting living beings, the World Buddhism Association Headquarters took the liberty to accept the conferment decree and the Pope of Buddhism Scepter. When the World Buddhism Association Headquarters respectfully presented the Pope of Buddhism Scepter and conferment decree to H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, His Holiness the Buddha III said: “I see that on top of this Scepter is the seated Shakyamuni Buddha, we should be respectful to Namo Shakyamuni Buddha.” His Holiness the Buddha then raised the Scepter above His head and made a symbolic closed palm gesture with one hand to express His respects. However, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III also expressed that He is just a humble cultivator and resolutely would not accept such a conferment. Hence, His Holiness the Buddha immediately returned the conferment decree and the Pope of Buddhism Scepter to the two Councils.

On September 23, 2020, the World Peace Prize Awarding Council and World Peace Prize Religious Leaders Title Awarding Council passed an ultimate joint resolution, determining that the return of the Pope of Buddhism Scepter and conferment decree by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III was not effectible. On September 24, the joint Chair of the World Peace Prize Awarding Council and World Peace Prize Religious Leaders Title Awarding Council Suzi Leggett made the ultimate announcement at the Holy Miracles Temple of the World Buddhism Association Headquarters: “Over the past several decades, the World Peace Prize Awarding Council has presented the World Peace Prize to presidents, spiritual leaders, and prime ministers of many nations, including President Ronald Reagan, Hon. Mahatma Gandhi, and H.E. Yitzhak Rabin. There has never been a precedence of an award being retracted or returned. All determinations made and implemented by our Councils are very solemn, serious, and absolutely cannot be changed. The return of the Pope of Buddhism Scepter and conferment decree by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is deemed not effectible. The title, status, and authority of the Pope of Buddhism belong only to H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, and cannot be exercised by anyone else.” Chair Leggett once again requested that the World Buddhism Association Headquarters accept and present to H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III the Pope of Buddhism Scepter and conferment decree that His Holiness the Buddha previously returned.

Representing the World Buddhism Association Headquarters, Venerable Mozhi Rinpoche accepted the conferment decree and Pope of Buddhism Scepter. He said during his speech, “The World Buddhism Association Headquarters considers that the decision made by the two Councils is remarkably proper and sagacious.

“Ever since Namo Shakyamuni Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, there has not been a supreme leader who has the authority to guide all Buddhists the same way that the Buddha did. However, the authoritative position of the Pope of Buddhism certainly is not a role that a leader of a single Buddhist sect would have the attributes to fulfill; rather, the Pope must be a leader who has authority over the entirety of Buddhism, namely, a Buddha.

“Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III holds the perfect teachings of Buddhism and meets the criteria used by all Buddhist sects to recognize a Buddha. His inherent nature is in accord with that of a Buddha. His unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment is in accord with that of a Buddha. Just based on the accomplishment of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III in Lifting the Pestle onto the Platform, surpassing His own base weight standard by 59 levels, no one else can possibly reach such a record.

“The state of virtue of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is that of a Buddha. His Holiness the Buddha has perfect mastery of Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism, perfect accomplishments in the Five Vidyas, and so forth, all of which accord with the unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment of a Buddha.

“In more than 2,000 years, there has not been a Buddhist Holy Guru in this world who possesses the same Buddha level qualities. Just by the facts that H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III vowed and carries out the vow to benefit living beings purely on a voluntary basis and does not accept any offerings throughout His entire life, and that He possesses perfect wisdom and unimpeded accomplishments, no other Holy Guru can be of comparison. Only Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III can take on this immensely noble, holy, and heavy responsibility of the Pope of Buddhism, to properly guide Buddhists onto the correct path of learning Buddhism.

“Therefore, on behalf of Buddhists, the World Buddhism Association Headquarters thanks the World Peace Prize Awarding Council and the World Peace Prize Religious Leaders Title Awarding Council for having made the ultimate decision.”

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is selfless and noble, and the first person in Buddhism to possess substantive holy realization power of a Buddha and perfectly flawless accomplishments at the pinnacle of the Five Vidyas. These are the qualities that no other eminent Buddhist monastic or virtuous person in this world has so perfectly attained. It is naturally a matter of course that H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is the veritable Pope of Buddhism.

Religious Leaders Hold Dharma Assembly in Glendale to Honor the Holy Birthday of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

By Jon Stojan Contributor

To honor the Holy Birthday of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, revered as the Pope of Buddhism, several prominent Buddhist organizations including the World Buddhism Association Headquarters, Holy Miracles Temple, Hua Zang Si, Benevolence Temple, and the Sanger Mission, jointly organized a Grand Dharma Assembly in Glendale, California. The two-day event took place on June 30th and July 1st, 2023, at the Glendale Civic Auditorium and attracted over a thousand Buddhists from around the world.

June 30th marked the unveiling of the first three volumes of the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection”. The Dharma Assembly opened with a procession led by a group of nuns, chanting the Buddha’s name “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III”. The “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection” was gracefully displayed on a sacred sedan chair, carried by Holy Gurus Venerable Tsemang and Ruzun Bodi Wentu. In a display of reverence, all attendees of the Assembly humbly prostrated themselves, paying their respects to the Collection.

In the Dharma Assembly, Venerable Tsemang addressed the congregation, emphasizing the significance of the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection”: “We have undertaken the significant task of editing and publishing the first part of the ‘Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection.’ This endeavor not only expresses our profound gratitude and unwavering yearning for H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III but, more importantly, will enable countless sentient beings to attain accomplishment and liberation through studying the Collection. We firmly believe that the ‘Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection’ will serve as the ultimate guide for all Buddhist disciples seeking accomplishment and liberation.

“The Collection encompasses the essence of the Tripitaka and the esoteric Buddhist scriptures. It covers Buddhist precepts, views, cultivation, and Dharma practices. It covers the whole spectrum of Buddhism regardless of whether it is Hinayana, Mahayana, or Vajrayana. Through the Collection, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III reveals the most direct and expedient path for sentient beings, Arhats, and Bodhisattvas to advance themselves. If we diligently study and practice the teachings on even a single volume of the Collection, while focusing on any one dharma-gate, we can be assured of attaining liberation.”

During this Age of Dharma Degeneration, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III descended to the earthly realm, exhibiting perfect mastery of Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism, along with unparalleled expertise in the Five Vidyas. The Five Vidyas are what Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do to help living beings. Over the past 2,000 years, Buddhist teachings have encountered distortions and alterations due to mistranslation and misinterpretation of Buddha-dharma by Buddhist patriarchs, eminent monastics, and Buddhist scholars. Recognizing the distortions and errors that had infiltrated Buddhist teachings, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III corrected the mistakes present in the Buddhist teachings, restoring the authenticity, power, and purity of Buddha’s wisdom and views.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has bequeathed over two thousand audio recordings of imparted Dharmas and published invaluable Buddhist books, including “A Monk Expounds the Absolute Truth to a Layperson,” “Commentary on the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra,” “The Essence of Buddha Dharma,” “Correcting the Treatises of Patriarch Bodhidharma,” “What Is Cultivation?,” “The Supreme and Unsurpassable Mahamudra of Liberation,” and “Learning From Buddha.” H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III imparted the subtleties of Dharmas in colloquial language so that people living in the 21st century could easily comprehend. They serve as supreme treasures and indispensable resources for Buddhist disciples seeking to escape the sufferings of this world and attain enlightenment.

In response to the needs of Buddhist disciples, the Office of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is working to transcribe audio recordings of Dharmas imparted by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III into extensive written texts, and the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection” is being meticulously compiled. The first three volumes of the Collection, consisting of “Dharma Imparted During the Trip to the East,” “Dharma Imparted During a Trip in Response to the Needs of Disciples,” and “Imparting the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra,” were released to commemorate this Holy Birthday of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. The remaining volumes will be released and published in the future.

The Dharma Assembly continued July 1st, 2023, with participants representing Buddhist disciples all over the world presenting 108 offerings to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.  Under the solemn direction of Jiaozun Zhengda, the congregation recited the Buddhist Sutra “Sutra on Understanding and Realizing Definitive Truth”. The attendees offered heartfelt reverence to the Buddhas, engaged in prostrations, and prayed to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for blessings upon all sentient beings. The gathering collectively expressed their aspirations for the eradication of all global pandemics, the endurance of international peace and friendship, and the cessation of calamities, while invoking prosperity, good health, and longevity for all.

Venerable Pannavati, some of her students, and other attendees at the Dharma Assembly

Venerable Pannavati Karuna, the Abbot of Heartwood Refuge monastery in North Carolina, led dozens of her students to attend the Dharma Assembly. In an interview, she said: “I was introduced to Buddha Master (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) 18 years ago through Zhaxi Zhouma Rinpoche. I thought I had too many duties and responsibilities to follow His teachings. But I kept reading and pondering them through the years. I began to notice in my everyday life the truth and ability to live differently in the world. I had more integrity, clarity, joy for the first time and an understanding that enlightenment was possible if one follows the true teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. Buddha Master imparted Dharmas and explained those teachings in a down to earth, understandable way without compromise. He even spoke African American slang. Sometimes translators had a difficult time translating it into English because they may not fully understand the slang. But I heard it and I understood what He meant. That is the marvelousness of a true Buddha in this world. He can speak the language in a way that you hear it, understand it, penetrate it, and realize it. He guided me towards the correct aspiration. The goal is not Buddhist studies, and realization cannot be explained by mere words, but it can be experienced. The true purpose of the Buddha Dharma is to awaken us to our Buddha-nature. His teachings point the way.”

Gongjue Tuji Rinpoche from Germany also shared his joyfulness after attending the Dharma Assembly. He said: “I am very happy to be here today on this very auspicious occasion. Because for us Westerners, it is very hard to get the teachings and Dharma from Buddha Master since most of us do not speak Chinese. I am very happy about this event today that we are finally getting the opportunity to get the Buddha Dharma in English language, and we will have direct access to it.”

The Dharma Assembly held in Glendale fostered unity and devotion among Buddhist practitioners from diverse backgrounds. With the release of the first volumes of “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection”, the event left an indelible mark on the spiritual aspirations of attendees, inspiring them to pursue enlightenment and emulate the compassion and wisdom demonstrated by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.

The Venerable Tsemang’s Speech at the 2025 Dharma Ceremony in Honor of the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

2025-06-07  HQ Announcementshqa2025

Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III!

Namo Shakyamuni Buddha!

Namo Yuhua Shouzhi Wang Holy Mother the Great Mahasattva!

Namo all Buddhas in the ten directions, Vajra Beings, Bodhisattvas, Sky-goers, and Dharma Protectors!

Buddhist disciples from all over the world have once again gathered here. We give thanks and pay respects to Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III. We learn the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection,” which is the Dharma treasure that Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III bestowed upon humanity. We commemorate the Holy Birthday of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III annually.

During this Dharma ending age, in which true Dharma diminishes, and evil forces prevail, it has been our tremendous good fortune to encounter the magnificent Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, and learn the true Buddha Dharma that enable us to attain liberation from cyclical birth and death. Whatever questions arise in the course of learning from Buddha and practicing cultivation, we can find all the answers elucidated in the Dharmas expounded by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III. These Dharmas are available in audio recordings and in published books. As a living being with utmost humility, I will share some of my experiences for everyone’s reference.

First: As Buddhist disciples, our goal is not to seek worldly fame or fortune. Our fundamental goal is to attain liberation! At any time and place, we must remember this goal and resolutely not deviate from it.

The Buddha taught us repeatedly that in order to attain liberation, we must start by cultivating our conduct. Practicing cultivation includes strictly abiding by the precepts and maintaining correct knowledge and views. Precepts are stipulated by the Buddhas. Correct knowledge and views can only come from the Buddhas: In the present era, you can only find them in the audio recordings of the Dharmas expounded by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III. These Dharmas have been and will continue to be published in the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection.”

To attain liberation, we must also practice Dharma. Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III transmitted many Dharmas to us. These Dharma treasures are rafts that enable us to attain liberation. We must practice Dharma persistently and effortfully.

Second: As Buddhist disciples, our goal is to become arhats, Bodhisattvas, and eventually attain Buddhahood. Therefore, now that we are in our cultivation stage, we must be “sincere and truthful to Buddha, pious to Buddha Dharma, compassionate to living beings, and honest with ourselves.” It is by being sincere and truthful to Buddha that we can receive teachings. It is by being pious to Buddha Dharma that we can practice persistently and effortfully. It is by being compassionate to living beings that we can help them rather than hurt them. It is by being honest with ourselves that we can truly practice cultivation and accumulate merit.

Third: As Buddhist disciples, we must clearly understand and believe in causality. The Buddha’s descent into this world, and the Buddha’s entering Parinirvana were due to the shared karma and causality of all living beings. The arrival of the Dharma ending age was due to the shared karma and causality of all living beings. Yet our own causality is enabling us to learn from Buddha and practice cultivation to attain accomplishment and liberation!

As long as we respectfully listen to audio recordings of the Dharmas expounded by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III; sincerely study the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection”; reflect upon our own conduct at all times; repent of our own sins; strictly abide by the precepts; matter-of-factly practice cultivation; diligently practice Dharma; propagate the Sutras of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III; uphold and protect the teachings of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III and Namo Shakyamuni Buddha; do all kinds of good deeds; and not do any bad deeds, then we will definitely attain liberation!

Not only are we going to attain liberation, but we must also propagate the magnificent true Buddha Dharma, so that more people may encounter and learn the Dharma expounded by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, and from which they can achieve perfect good fortune and wisdom, and attain liberation from cyclical birth and death!

Wishing that all congregants here today and all living beings fulfill their beneficent wishes, have good fortune and wisdom, and attain great liberation and accomplishment! Wishing that all countries be strong and prosperous, and all living beings safe and happy! May peace be on earth and may auspiciousness be with all living beings!

Once again, let us pay obeisance!

Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III!

Namo Shakyamuni Buddha!

Namo Yuhua Shouzhi Wang Holy Mother the Great Mahasattva! Namo all Buddhas in the ten directions, Vajra Beings, Bodhisattvas, Sky-goers, and Dharma Protectors!

San Francisco, CA – On Sunday, May 4, 2025 (Sunday) – Hua Zang Si, a renowned Buddhist temple in San Francisco, solemnly hosted the Bathing the Buddha Dharma Assembly, welcoming local residents and visitors from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. This sacred gathering commemorated the Holy Birthday of Shakyamuni Buddha, the World-Honored One, offering attendees a profound spiritual experience.

Organized by the World Buddhism Association Headquarters (W.B.A.H.), Hua Zang Si, and Sanger Mission, the event offered profound spiritual enrichment and served as a harmonious celebration that united the community in shared reverence and joy.

Under the guidance of Abbess of Hua Zang Si Temple, Ruzun Ruohui, the ceremony commenced in the temple’s majestic Grand Hall, where attendees chanted “The Heart Sutra” and the “Bathing the Buddha Verse” in unison, seeking blessings, wisdom, and spiritual purification. At the Bathing the Buddha Pavilion, participants held ritual ladles and poured fragrant water over the statue of the infant Prince Siddharta Gautama — later known as Shakyamuni Buddha —accompanied by heartfelt prayers:

“Today, I bathe the Buddha with a wholeheartedly pious, seeking blessings and wisdom from the Buddha. May I and all sentient beings be free from obstacles and together attain the realization of the Pure Land.”

The rituals serve as a reminder of Buddha’s profound teachings on mindfulness and self-cultivation, inspiring all individuals—regardless of their beliefs—to cultivate compassion, reflect on their actions, and strive for a harmonious and meaningful life. Blessings were offered for all sentient beings to be freed from defilements and burdens, fostering a compassionate force to bring harmony and stability to society. The merit of this ceremony was dedicated to alleviating global disasters and pandemics, ending conflicts, bringing happiness to all living beings, and a prosperous and peaceful nation.

According to Buddhist scriptures, following the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, nine dragons poured streams of fragrant water to bathe Him—which later became a tradition upheld globally in commemoration of His holy birth. The “Sutra on the Merits Accrued from Bathing the Buddha” details the blessings associated with this sacred practice, including health, longevity, spiritual fulfillment, and familial harmony. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of fragrant water to devotees, filling them with immense joy and spiritual bliss.

Founded on December 26, 2004, in San Francisco’s Mission District, Hua Zang Si has become a prominent center for authentic Buddhist teachings, guided by the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and Shakyamuni Buddha. Throughout the year, the temple hosts Blessing Dharma Assemblies, providing a welcoming and inclusive space for individuals to engage with the profound teachings of Buddhism.

In addition to its spiritual mission, Hua Zang Si remains deeply committed to humanitarian efforts. Over the years, the temple has organized Lunar New Year celebrations at nursing homes, assisted with hospital relocations, provided meals to those affected by disasters, and conducted charity sales to support underserved populations. Recent initiatives have included fundraising for animal rescue centers, assisting low-income families, donating to local food banks, and delivering essential supplies to wildfire-affected areas. Hua Zang Si continues to embody the principles of compassion, unity, and service, fostering hope and harmony throughout the community.

Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection

During this Dharma-Ending Age, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III descended to the human realm, demonstrating perfect mastery of both Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism, as well as unsurpassed accomplishment in the Five Vidyas—the disciplines through which Buddhas and Bodhisattvas benefit sentient beings.

Over the past 2,000 years, the teachings of the Buddha have been distorted through mistranslation and misinterpretation by patriarchs, eminent monastics, and scholars. Recognizing these errors, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III corrected the deviations that had crept into the Dharma, restoring its original purity, wisdom, and power.

Having come to the saha world during this degenerate age, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III left behind irrefutable, supreme examples of omniscient realization in the Exoteric and Esoteric teachings, as well as in the Five Vidyas. He also provided incisive, complete sutras and audio recordings of the Dharma He expounded. These supreme Dharma treasures are essential for all Buddhist practitioners to study and put into practice in order to attain realization and liberation.

In short, anyone who wishes to achieve true accomplishment and liberation must earnestly study the “Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection.

Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection primarily consists of the transcriptions of the Dharma discourses by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha, and also includes all of the Buddha’s sutras, poems, writings, and other works. Given the urgent needs of those studying the teachings and the vast quantity and length of the Buddha’s discourses, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III Complete Sutra Collection is being published in volumes over time (up to now, six volumes have been published).

Volume I: Dharma Expounded During a Trip to the East

On November 13, 2008, the United States Congress held an art exhibition for the Buddha Mother (Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang) inside the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. To ensure the safe transportation of the artworks, it was decided to rent a recreational vehicle (RV), forming a convoy with the truck carrying the artworks. Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, the Buddha Mother, and accompanying disciples all traveled and lived in the RV during the journey.

The convoy led by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III departed from Los Angeles on October 25, 2008, and arrived in Washington, D.C. on November 10. Following the successful completion of the Buddha Mother Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang’s art exhibition at the Capitol on November 13, the group returned on November 26. The journey lasted 33 days, traversing more than 20 states from the western to the eastern United States. Except for the time spent in D.C., where they were occupied with preparing the exhibition, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III gave Dharma discourses to His disciples almost every evening during the trip. These teachings were compiled into the Dharma Expounded During a Trip to the East, totaling 19 volumes.

Throughout the journey, many holy manifestations occurred wherever Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III went, some of which were mentioned by the Buddha during the teachings. On the day before the journey concluded, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III even performed a Dharma rite to eliminate obstacles for His disciples. Moreover, after returning to Los Angeles, at the Buddha’s Vajra Mandala in Pasadena, holy nectar descended from the Buddha, confirming that the Dharma Teaching Journey to the East is a pure and supreme Tathagata Dharma of the Buddha.

Volume II: Dharma Expounded During a Trip in Response to the Needs of Disciples

In October 2021, after the government lifted the restrictions on public gatherings and travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, the Buddha Mother, and accompanying disciples set out by car along the coastal Highway 1, traveling from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Along the way and during their stay in San Francisco, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III gave Dharma discourses daily, addressing questions raised by His disciples.

After returning to Los Angeles, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III made a special trip to Las Vegas because Rocket, the guardian dog of the Las Vegas Dharma center, had dashed out the gate and was fatally hit by a car. The Buddha performed a transcendental liberation ceremony for Rocket and also gave daily Dharma teachings to His disciples.

From these two trips, a total of fifteen volumes of Dharma discourses were compiled.

Volume III: Expounding the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III expounds the Dharma using the words and profound meanings of the Heart Sutra, illuminating the relationship between the mind, the Buddha, and sentient beings. This can also be described as an explanation of the impermanence and permanence of all things—both sentient and insentient—in the universe, as well as the principles of formation, existence, decay, and emptiness versus the truth of no formation, existence, decay, or emptiness. What is a Buddha? What is the relationship between sentient beings and the Buddha? What does it mean to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death? H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III clearly explains the true essence of Buddhism and the meaning of liberation.

The Dharma teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III are profoundly insightful, precise, and easy to understand. One can only say that, in the thousands of years of Buddhist history, this is the first time such a supreme, precious Buddhist text and highest-level classic has appeared.

Volume IV: Fundamental Dharma Expounded in the East

Fundamental Dharma Expounded in the East is the first publicly released series of Dharma discourses given by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III to all disciples in 1995. It is a compilation of selected teachings and instructions delivered between 1992 and 1994, during a time when people were not yet aware of His true identity as a Buddha and only knew Him as Master Yi Yungao.

Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III titled this set of teachings “Foundational Dharma Teachings” to emphasize that the principles explained within are essential for every Buddhist practitioner—they are truths that must be clearly understood and applied in actual cultivation on the path of learning Buddhism and practicing the Dharma.

Through direct discourses, answers to disciples’ questions, empowerment during Dharma practices, and reports of disciples’ personal experiences, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III helps people deeply comprehend the Dharma, gain thorough insight, and apply it concretely in their lives. At the same time, by respectfully listening to these Dharma discourses, we can truly come to recognize that the “supreme greatness” of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha is fully deserved and genuinely manifested.

Volume V: Dharma Expounded During a Trip to Taiwan

Dharma Expounded During a Trip to Taiwan is a compilation of selected Dharma discourses given by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III between 1995 and 1996. The complete set consists of 18 volumes, organized into the following sections:

  1. Volume 1: The Supreme and Incomparable Dharma
This volume presents a profound and rare teaching of the highest order.
  2. Volumes 2 to 6: The True and Unimaginable Deeds of Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III

Volume VI: Dharma Expounded During a Trip to the United States

At the end of September 1998, due to a significant karmic cause related to the Dharma, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III came to the United States alone in a simple and unassuming manner. During His 40-day stay on the West Coast of the U.S., in addition to visiting many cities in Southern California, He also led His disciples along the coastal Highway 1 northward to San Francisco and visited the world-famous casino city, Las Vegas.

To ensure His disciples received the greatest benefit, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III upheld the consistent practice of Buddhas throughout history—whenever He arrived at a place, He would do His best to make time to expound the Dharma for the public, offering teachings anytime and anywhere. He diligently nurtured His disciples’ correct understanding and views. The Dharma Expounded During a Trip to the United States is a compilation of the Dharma discourses delivered by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III during this visit. From the titles of these discourses, one can see that He gave teachings in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, at the then headquarters of the “Yi Yungao Master International Cultural Foundation,” and other locations. Out of great compassion, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III began by addressing even the most basic questions posed by the disciples at the time. Step by step, He guided their growth, encouraging them not only to cultivate themselves in the Buddha-Dharma, but also to give rise to bodhicitta and compassion, to widely propagate the radiant and magnificent Dharma, and to help more kind-hearted beings learn the conduct of the Buddhas and walk the path of liberation.

In October 1998, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III led fourteen disciples from Los Angeles on a road trip along Highway 1 to San Francisco. The evil demons, knowing that this journey marked an important karmic event for the entire Dharma realm—whereby the true Buddha-Dharma would begin to flourish in America and the Western world, leading countless sentient beings of the Saha world to attain accomplishment and liberation—launched an assault. The Demon King Mara specifically sent many demon generals with their minions, attempting to destroy this great Dharma propagation event by taking the lives of the Buddha’s disciples.

As a result, various demons and evil spirits continuously created disturbances along the route, attacking and sabotaging H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and His entourage. What was originally planned as a one-day trip took five days to complete. Yet, the demons could not ultimately prevent the Buddha’s mission of spreading the Dharma and saving sentient beings. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III subdued each demon one by one. Under His guidance, all the disciples safely arrived in San Francisco, symbolizing that the authentic Buddha-Dharma of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III would indeed blossom and bear fruit in the United States and throughout the Western world, bringing auspiciousness and liberation to the sentient beings of the Saha world.

In a heartfelt endeavor to bring solace and hope to those suffering worldwide, the Holy Miracles Temple in Pasadena, Southern California, conducted a series of noteworthy Buddhist prayer ceremonies.

Organized by the World Buddhism Association Headquarters, Holy Miracles Temple, and Jen Chen Buddhism Sanger Mission, these gatherings saw a substantial turnout of local community members. Together, they chanted “The Lotus Sutra’s Universal Gate Chapter on Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva” and “The Buddha Speaks of Amitabha Sutra” with a shared intention for peace and relief for all life forms enduring hardships globally. Participants expressed reverence and sought the blessings of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, hoping to ease sufferingsupport peaceful conditionsreduce conflicts, and encourage global harmony.

In recent years, the world has faced numerous challenges: ongoing conflicts, earthquakes in Japan’s Noto Peninsula and Myanmar, frequent wildfires in California and Australia, floods in southern China and Indonesia due to heavy rains, and outbreaks of dengue fever and new viral diseases in Africa and Central and South America. These events have heightened a sense of shared adversity globally. Holy Miracles Temple endeavors, through these Buddhist rituals, to offer spiritual support for the departed souls’ ascension to the Pure Land, encourage the swift reconstruction of disaster-affected areas, and provide a space for those in distress to find emotional relief, courage, and renewed hope.

The ceremonies were both solemn and heartwarming, with the collective expressions of goodwill and chanting symbolically extending beyond geographical boundaries. This gathering served as a meaningful demonstration of community unity, generating a sense of positive intention and a shared commitment to facing difficulties through compassion. Participants noted that attending the prayer ceremony at Holy Miracles Temple allowed them to engage in prayerful reflection for victims, emphasizing Buddhism’s contributions to fostering inner peace and societal harmony.

This initiative reinforces Holy Miracles Temple’s commitment to the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, highlighting the core Buddhist values of striving for the liberation and well-being of sentient beings. It underscores the essential qualities of cultivators: the Four Immeasurable States of Mind—kindness, compassion, joy, and almsgiving. In addition to regularly donating essential goods to local welfare organizations, the World Buddhism Association Headquarters has called for continued compassion and material support for Myanmar’s earthquake victims, combining humanitarian concern with religious practice and encouraging public participation in relief and blessing efforts.

To address the dire situation in Myanmar following the earthquake, where numerous families have been displaced amid ongoing civil strife and infrastructure damage, a donation appeal has been issued. The residents in the devastated areas urgently need humanitarian aid. The World Buddhism Association Headquarters encourages everyone to contribute to organizations like the United Nations World Food Programme, International Committee of the Red Cross, International Rescue Committee, Médecins Sans Frontières, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. These organizations are actively involved in relief efforts. It is recommended that everyone conduct due diligence before donation to ensure appropriate contributions.

A substantial turnout of local community members participated in the gatherings organized by the World Buddhism Association Headquarters, Holy Miracles Temple, and Jen Chen Buddhism Sanger Mission.

The Holy Miracles Temple emphasizes that everyone can contribute to a better world by cultivating goodwill. In the face of impermanence and disaster, even a single act of kindness—be it a blessing, a chant, or a good deed—can help uplift others and serve as a beacon of hope. The temple plans to continue organizing similar sutra chanting and prayer events, encouraging broader public participation to help inspire a more peaceful and stable world through collective compassion and mindful action. The series of prayer ceremonies also serves as a reminder to the world that fortune and misfortune are ever-changing, and life is fragile. Only through the purification of the mind guided by the principles of the Buddha’s teachings, along with actual practice, can one’s misfortune truly be transformed. In this ever-changing and impermanent world, it is a way to find genuine peace and light, and to move toward a future of harmony and sustainability.

Life Stories of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

Life Stories of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

In the last post, I mentioned the treasured book H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III: A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma. It is a comprehensive and extensive read, which can feel overwhelming to some. I was recently asked if there is an easier-to-read book that also provides insight into the Buddha’s life and teachings.

In fact, on page 139 of A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma, under Category 2: The Virtue of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and Holy Occurrences, you’ll find inspiring stories and testimonies from disciples. Many readers may find these accounts both engaging and easy to read, making them a great starting point for those yearning to learn more.

I sure can introduce another book that offers a glimpse into the Buddha’s daily life—Revealing the Truth. The paper copies of the book are available at Buddhist temples or can be purchased online at Amazon. It chronicles the personal experiences of a nun over 12 years (2001–2013) at the Buddha’s home base. As the cover describes, it explores moments of disappointment, sadness, pain, and ultimately, awakening.

A Buddhist Nun Tells the Extraordinary Story of Her Practice in America

Upon graduating law school, Shi Zheng Hui decided she could better penetrate and accomplish her life by entering a monastery in Taiwan as a Buddhist nun. In 2001, she was given a rare opportunity to study in America at the Temple and home base of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III where she received Buddhist training of the highest order.  Her book, Revealing the Truth tells the story of her extraordinary experiences there, including being witness to miraculous manifestations during Holy Assemblies and on other occasions.  Her story exemplifies the sometimes painful and sometimes exultant life of a deeply committed Buddhist cultivating herself through effort and self-reflection to emulate the actions, speech and thoughts of a Bodhisattva (a selfless being who lives to help others eliminate suffering and become enlightened.)  After years of cultivation and refinement, Zheng Hui proves her worthiness to receive a very great Dharma practice and is transmitted the Xian Liang Great Perfection Dharma through which she actually accomplishes the rainbow body state.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, by virtue of His unprecedented accomplishments, has been recognized to be the incarnation of the Ancient Buddha by scores of high-level masters from Tibet and elsewhere. On September 10, 2008, the US House of Representatives confirmed these recognitions in H. Res. 1423. Prior to this recognition in 2008, His Holiness was known as the Great Dharma King Yangwo Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu and also as Master Wan Ko Yee.

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is also famous in Asian Art circles for His paintings and sculptures.  A recent painting, Ink Lotus, was sold by the Gianguan Auction House on March 11, 2015 for over 16 million dollars. One of the His Holiness’s widely viewed sculptures contains a mysterious mist that miraculously occupies a cavernous carving in a sculpted boulder.  This otherworldly sculpture has been exhibited at the US Capitol’s Rayburn building in October 2003 and in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

Revealing the Truth is now in English translation from the original Mandarin language edition published in Taiwan in 2013.

A Sacred Experience Beyond Imagination

Determination by Holy Selection on the Regression or Progression on the Bodhi Path

The status of a Tai Zun is far superior to that of a Dharma King. A Tai Zun attains their position through genuine realization and holy verification, whereas the title of Dharma King is merely an empty name granted by ordinary people. Although a Tai Zun holds a higher status, I had never personally witnessed one perform a Dharma ritual—until yesterday, May 14th, when the conditions finally ripened.

This great Maha Sattva, a Five-Vajra Tai Zun, whom we also respectfully refer to as Sheng Zun (Holy Venerable), conducted a Dharma assembly at the World Buddhism Headquarters alongside us monastics. He publicly performed the profound “Determination by Holy Selection on the Regression or Progression on the Bodhi Path” for a devoted disciple engaged in Buddhist practices. This experience opened my eyes to the sacred realm—leaving me in utter astonishment, complete prostration, and deep repentance.

It turns out that the “Determination by Holy Selection on the Regression or Progression on the Bodhi Path” is truly the supreme Dharma among Dharmas. Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III said: “This is the Invincible Vajra Dharma to Enable Buddhist Practitioners to Achieve Accomplishment.” If an individual with such advanced cultivation conducts this Dharma successfully before the congregation, then this individual must be a Bodhisattva or a Buddha, a Tremendous Holy Guru. I had longed to attend such a Dharma assembly, and now, after countless lifetimes, I finally had the rare fortune to witness it. Knowing the preciousness of this opportunity, I cherished every second. Eager to observe the holy manifestation, I positioned myself about four feet away, keeping my eyes wide open to capture every detail.

All of us present fixed our gaze upon the disciple receiving the empowerment as she carefully counted and placed ten Bodhi pills into a porcelain cup. Sheng Zun, standing at a distance, never approached the cup throughout the ritual. Suddenly, as the Dharma was being performed, the cup began to emit a radiant glow, and a rare, enchanting fragrance filled the air. Then, with the striking of a bell—a sound unlike any ordinary chime, as if rolling through the waves of wind—the entire grand hall became immersed in an atmosphere of auspiciousness, deeply touching our souls.

At that moment, all I could see was the cup before me; the hall and the offerings seemed to vanish. I felt as if I were seated on soft, floating air, my body gently spinning, yet my gaze remained fixed on the cup. Then, in an eerie stillness, beyond all worldly distractions, an extraordinary event unfolded—the ten Bodhi pills inside the cup suddenly increased to thirteen. It was truly miraculous! Upon recounting, there was no doubt—the number had indeed grown.

The disciple’s sincerity had brought forth such an extraordinary blessing. From that moment on, the Bodhi pills she possessed would continue to multiply, allowing her to take one each day or month, ensuring longevity, perfect health, and boundless wisdom and merit, ultimately leading to enlightenment.

What is most admirable about Sheng Zun is that despite possessing such an extraordinary level of realization, he remains entirely free from ego and desire for fame. He told us:

“Once the Bodhi pills have been empowered, they are empowered. This is the blessing of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—it is not my doing. Do not mention me. If anyone brings up my Dharma name, you will not be allowed to attend any future Dharma assemblies I conduct. We are all disciples of the Buddha; what matters is cultivating ourselves in accordance with the Dharma, not using titles to show off.”

He then turned to the disciple and said:

“I will take one Bodhi pill and offer it to my revered teacher, Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III, as a blessing for tomorrow’s holy Buddha’s birthday—may auspiciousness and joy be eternal.”

Sheng Zun’s humility and detachment from worldly fame stand in stark contrast to the hollow titles of false Dharma Kings. His transcendent virtue is an unparalleled model for all practitioners and a wake-up call for my own self-reflection.

With profound repentance, I now make a solemn vow before the Buddhas of the ten directions—to cultivate the Dharma with utmost sincerity, to awaken myself and help others awaken.

Feng shui and Fortune Telling cannot change Fortune and Fate

Reply to Inquiry No.20210103

Regarding the inquiry that a particular individual falsely claimed to have obtained permission from His Holiness the Buddha and declared to Buddhist practitioners that Feng shui and fortunetelling can change fortune and fate, the team of Holy Gurus of the World Buddhism Association Headquarters has respectfully submitted a verification petition to Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III. His Holiness the Buddha proclaims, “It is a vicious fallacy against causality and inherently an evil ideology. I have already elucidated the distinction between the righteous and evil of this kind. You are pitiful if you align with evil, and no one can save you.”

Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III expounds Dharma and cautions all Buddhist disciples: “The Law of Cause and Effect is a universal law underlying all phenomena in the universe. It is not an evil heresy of metamorphic feudal superstition, nor voodoo occult fallacies of yin-yang Fengshui and fortunetelling by religious charlatans or sorceress.” These are all fraudulent schemes. Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III has explicitly expounded in the 128 Evil and Erroneous Views that “Acknowledging it is acceptable not to have a clear belief in cause and effect yet have a superstitious belief in fortunetelling and luck. Not having a strong conviction in causality, not believing in causality, rejecting causality and believing in fortunetelling and luck are evil views. It is imperative to understand that all events and phenomena in the universe are based upon causality.” Hence, you reap what you sow. Feng shui and fortunetelling cannot change what you have done in the past. Feudal superstitions such as Feng shui, fortunetelling, physiognomy (face reading), heterodoxy or strange and heretically induced phenomena do not conform to Buddhism. Accordingly, believing these superstitions and spreading fallacies to deceive people are heretic non-Buddhist words and deeds. Regardless of any individual’s status, whoever accepts and practices them is not a genuine Buddhist.

Furthermore, any Buddhist who slightly threads the heterodox path cannot perceive the Tathagata and will not reap the fruits of fortune and wisdom. Evil heresy cannot change one’s fate and can turn any believer into a pathetic, evil person. Therefore, we must follow the Dharma expounded by Namo Dorje Chang Buddha III and the doctrines established by Namo Shakyamuni Buddha. We must turn away from all evildoings and do all good deeds, be compassionate and benefit humanity and all living beings. We should chant and pray for prosperity for all countries, robust and wholesome health for all people, abundant harvest of all crops and peace, auspiciousness and happiness for the world. That is the right path. Sowing the seeds of learning from Buddha and practicing Buddhist cultivation begets the fruits of fortune, wisdom, and, ultimately, perfect and complete liberation.
