As autumn quietly arrives on the vast land of Xinjiang, a stunning visual feast also begins. Autumn in Xinjiang is like a vivid, colorful painting, with every scene exuding its own unique charm.

If Tibet offers people a spiritual shock, then Xinjiang provides a visual impact.

This is the place in China where autumn’s colors are the richest, with vibrant hues blooming amidst alternating poplar forests, lakes, rivers, and deserts.

If you missed the lush greenery of summer, you definitely cannot miss the splendid autumn of Xinjiang. Below is a suggested itinerary for Northern Xinjiang.

Day 1: Arrive in Urumqi, which can be reached via Urumqi International Airport. Upon arrival, explore the city with key places such as the Erdaoqiao International Bazaar, Hongshan Park, and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum.

The International Bazaar is the largest bazaar in the world, combining Islamic culture, architecture, ethnic commerce, entertainment, and dining. It is known as the “Window to Xinjiang,” “Window to Central Asia,” and “Window to the World.” It symbolizes the prosperity of commerce and tourism in Xinjiang and serves as a scenic landmark in Urumqi, a city rich in ethnic diversity.

The architecture reflects a strong Islamic style, and while fulfilling modern functionality, it also recreates the historical glory of the ancient Silk Road. The bazaar showcases the deep ethnic characteristics and regional culture of Western China.

You can take Urumqi’s city rapid bus or BRT line 3 and get off at Erdaoqiao Station.Try Big Plate Chicken, baked buns, lamb kebabs, and hand-pulled rice to ignite your taste buds.

Day 2: Urumqi to Urho Ghost City, exploring the wind-eroded landscapes. Ghost City is also known as Urho Wind City.

It is a unique wind-eroded landform with bizarre shapes. The local Mongolian people call this place “Sulumuhaque,” and the Uygur people refer to it as “Shaytankarshi,” which means Ghost City. The Ghost City stands like a mighty castle in the vast Gobi desert.

This castle-like formation resembles pavilions, towers, corridors, streets, and even a demon’s treasure hall. On the western side of the city gate, there is a rock formation called the “Stone Monkey Gazing at the Sea,” and within the city, you’ll find the towering “Mount Fuji,” the temple-strewn “Angkor Wat,” the magnificent “Potala Palace,” and shapes that resemble a cobra, a roc, and other creatures. These scenes are incredibly varied and dazzling, forming a dreamlike maze.

From a distance, you’ll marvel at its grandeur and magnificence, praising nature’s incredible craftsmanship. Bathed in the glow of the setting sun, the Ghost City becomes a kaleidoscope of colors, resembling a medieval castle with uneven heights and intricate layers, creating a unique spectacle in the Gobi desert.

Day 3: Hemu Village, the most beautiful secluded village – Experience the traditional life of the Tuva people.

In autumn, the golden leaves of Hemu Village contrast beautifully with the rustic wooden houses. Walking along the village’s paths, the rustling of fallen leaves underfoot seems to whisper stories of the passing years. This is a great place to experience the life of the Tuva people. You can taste local delicacies, enjoy traditional singing and dancing, and immerse yourself in the charm of their unique culture.

Nestled in a vast open area surrounded by mountains, Hemu Village lies quietly, with the Tuva people’s pointed wooden houses and livestock pens scattered casually throughout the village.

A faint mist forms a winding white ribbon above the forest, drifting between the village and the mountains. The most captivating aspect of Hemu Village is its stunning autumn scenery, where mountains covered in red foliage are breathtaking. Smoke rises slowly through the autumn colors, forming a dreamy mist that makes the village look like a fairyland.

Day 4: Kanas – Immersing in the breathtaking scenery of lakes and mountains.

Kanas is one of the world’s rare “earthly paradises.” Its unparalleled beauty is something that even the best photography skills cannot fully capture.

Kanas combines the grandeur of northern landscapes with the delicate charm of southern waters. Additionally, there are other breathtaking spectacles such as the “Sea of Clouds with Buddha’s Light,” the “Color-Changing Lake,” the “Floating Wood Dyke,” and the “Lake Monster,” making it a true wonderland of the Western regions.

Kanas Lake: This lake, known as the “Earthly Fairyland,” reveals a unique charm in autumn. The lake’s water remains as emerald green as a gemstone, while the surrounding forests are transformed by autumn frost into a dazzling array of colors—fiery reds, golden yellows, and sunset oranges. These hues, set against the backdrop of a bright blue sky, form a breathtaking painting, as if nature itself had painted it with the finest brushstrokes.

Kanas Lake is an alpine lake nestled deep in the Altai Mountains’ dense forests. In 2009, it was named the “Most Beautiful Lake in China” by Chinese National Geography magazine.

Best time to visit: From June to early October.

Transportation: The Kanas Scenic Area has its own airport, and you can fly directly from Urumqi to Kanas. The flight takes about 50 minutes.

Day 5: From Baihaba to the Rainbow Beach, admire the colorful rocks and rivers.

Baihaba Village, known as “the first village in the northwest,” faces the towering mountains of Kazakhstan in the distance. The dense golden pine forests of the Altai Mountains stretch all the way to Baihaba, where the villagers’ wooden houses and livestock pens are scattered harmoniously among the pine and birch forests, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. All of the village’s buildings are made of raw wood, with rustic log cabins as its signature feature, giving it the feel of a European-style village.

Baihaba Village: This place, known as “one of the eight most beautiful towns in China,” is especially breathtaking in autumn. The entire village is surrounded by golden birch forests, making it look like a golden fairy-tale world. The old wooden houses are scattered harmoniously among the trees, with smoke gently rising from the chimneys, creating a strong sense of rustic life.

At sunset and in the misty mornings, the smoke drifts lazily, while cows and sheep graze on the hills, painting a picture of harmony between humans and nature. If Kanas is a secluded, ancient paradise, then Baihaba is a fairy-tale world nestled in an untouched natural environment.

In the morning, immerse yourself in the rustic atmosphere on the grasslands of Baihaba. In the afternoon, head to the spectacular Rainbow Beach to admire Xinjiang’s most beautiful Yardang landforms. The hills here have unique geological features and display a variety of colors. At sunset, under the sunlight, the rocks primarily glow red, with shades of green, purple, yellow, white, black, and transitional hues, creating a vibrant and mesmerizing palette, which is why it’s called “Rainbow Beach.”

Whenever the wind blows, strange sounds of varying lengths and pitches echo from the gullies and beneath the rocks, adding a mysterious and otherworldly feel to the place.

Day 6: Keketohai – Enjoy the tranquility of lakes and forests.

Keketohai Town is located 48 kilometers northeast of Fuyun County in the Altai Mountains, in northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In Kazakh, “Keketohai” means “green forest,” and in Mongolian, it means “blue river bend.”

In autumn, the golden birch forests of Keketohai beautifully complement the clear river waters. The river flows gently, reflecting the stunning scenery on both banks, like a giant mirror. Strolling along the river, feeling the breeze and listening to the birds sing, fills one with a sense of peace and serenity.

From here, you will have seen most of the beautiful autumn scenery in northern Xinjiang, and you can return to Urumqi to end your trip. If you have more time, you can visit Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) to admire the snowy mountains and emerald waters.

Heavenly Lake: A fairyland amidst the surrounding mountains.

Over the course of history, in the vast wilderness of China’s western regions, a place of extraordinary beauty emerged—Heavenly Lake in the Tianshan Mountains.

Historically known as “Jade Pool,” legend has it that King Mu of the Zhou dynasty traveled west and held a feast with the Queen Mother of the West here. In the Qing dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, it was named “Tianchi,” meaning “Heavenly Mirror” or “Divine Lake.”

Heavenly Lake is an extraordinary and mesmerizing sacred site.

Its fame not only comes from the beautiful and mysterious legends associated with it throughout history, but also from its unique natural and cultural landscapes, renowned both domestically and internationally! The Bogda Peak of the Tianshan Mountains rises to 5,445 meters above sea level, its snow-covered glaciers extending throughout the year. The snowy mountains and the blue lake complement each other, creating breathtaking scenery. The surface of the lake is crescent-shaped, and the water is crystal clear, as pure as jade.

The snow-capped peaks reflect in the lake, surrounded by towering spruce trees, with the emerald waters as smooth as a mirror, forming a picturesque landscape. Encircled by mountains, the area is lush with green grass and vibrant wildflowers, earning it the title “Pearl of the Tianshan Mountains.” Tall, verdant spruce and pine trees cover the mountains and ridges, creating a dense forest canopy.

In ancient Chinese philosophy, as referenced in the I Ching, the number “nine” is considered a yang number, symbolizing strength and vitality. The festival’s name, “Double Ninth” or “Chongyang,” refers to the doubling of this powerful number, representing longevity and blessings.

The pronunciation of “九九” (jiǔ jiǔ) sounds similar to “久久,” which means “long-lasting.” On this day, as autumn unfolds with its vivid hues, people gather to hike, enjoy the red cornelian cherries in bloom, eat Chongyang cakes, and drink Chongyang wine, all while offering prayers for well-being and longevity. The number nine, being the highest single-digit odd number, is symbolic of long life, carrying with it the wishes of good health and longevity for the elderly. As time passes and human lives inevitably age, nature remains timeless, and we all must face the farewells that are a part of life.

Chongyang Festival is one of China’s most significant traditional holidays, and over the centuries, its customs have continued to thrive. People climb to high places to seek blessings, enjoy autumn scenery, appreciate chrysanthemums, and wear cornelian cherry (茱萸) as part of the ancient traditions. The festival has also become China’s officially designated Senior Citizens’ Day, a reflection of the nation’s cultural emphasis on honoring the elderly, with filial piety at the heart of the celebrations. The deep respect for elders, a core Chinese value, is encapsulated in the tradition of (xiào), which has remained unchanged through the ages.

Historical records of Chongyang customs date back to Lüshi Chunqiu, and by the Han dynasty, it became common for people to wear cornelian cherries and drink chrysanthemum wine during the festival in hopes of promoting longevity. The chrysanthemum, admired for its elegance and resilience to frost, has long symbolized the virtuous gentleman in Chinese culture. During Chongyang, chrysanthemums bloom in abundance, and the festival would be incomplete without them. As the saying goes, “Without chrysanthemums, there is no Chongyang.” Ancient people lit chrysanthemum lanterns, decorated the streets with flower displays, and gathered to admire the blossoms in the evening, adding a special charm to the festival.

Tao Yuanming, one of China’s most beloved poets, wrote in the preface to Leisure at the Ninth Day: “In my leisure, I cherish the name of the Double Ninth Festival. With the garden full of chrysanthemums, I long for the wine but find none; so I simply sip the nine flowers in their essence.”

This imagery beautifully captures the festival spirit of sipping wine infused with chrysanthemum petals, a practice believed to preserve health and vitality. Wine has always been a key part of festive celebrations, and during Chongyang, chrysanthemum wine is essential. This traditional drink is believed to ward off misfortune and bring longevity.

The festival’s atmosphere is enhanced by the vibrant scenery of autumn. As the hills are covered in yellow flowers, one can imagine the joy of gathering with friends, sharing a drink, and admiring the beauty of chrysanthemums. This sense of togetherness is echoed in the works of Tang dynasty poet Meng Haoran, who described the simple pleasures of sitting with old friends by the window, drinking wine, and chatting while watching the lush vegetable garden outside. Such moments, rich in warmth and simplicity, remind us of the importance of human connection and the passage of time.

A key custom during Chongyang is wearing cornelian cherry. This tradition was especially popular during the Tang dynasty, as people believed that wearing these fruits could protect them from misfortune.

Cornelian cherries were worn on the head, the arm, or carried in sachets, serving as symbols of protection and unity among family and friends. The poet Wang Wei famously captured this sentiment in his poem Thinking of My Brothers on the Double Ninth:

“Alone, a stranger in a foreign land,
I long for my kin on every holiday.
I know my brothers are climbing high with cornelian cherries,
But there is one less person among them.”

His words reflect the deep homesickness and yearning for family, feelings that resonate with many who are far from home during important festivals.

Flower Cakes

Another significant tradition is eating flower cakes during Chongyang. The word “糕” (cake) sounds like “高” (high), and eating these cakes symbolizes the desire for life to “rise to new heights.” On the morning of Chongyang, mothers place small cakes on their children’s foreheads while whispering prayers for their health and safety, a heartwarming expression of parental love.

As autumn progresses and the white dew turns to frost, people celebrate the Double Ninth Festival by eating flower cakes, climbing to high places, and admiring the red leaves that blanket the hills. These simple yet profound traditions deepen the connection to nature and soften the heart’s longing for home.

The Chongyang Festival is not just a time to honor the elderly but also a celebration of the timeless values of family, respect, and filial piety. As families gather to enjoy the view from high hills and savor these precious moments together, they strengthen the bonds of kinship, appreciating the blessings of health, longevity, and the beauty of life’s passing seasons.

In ancient Tibet, there was a man named Aediba. Whenever he found himself angry or in the midst of an argument, he had a peculiar habit. He would immediately run home and circle his house and land three times before sitting down by the fields to catch his breath. As the years passed, Aediba worked tirelessly, and his house and land expanded significantly. But regardless of how large his property grew, he continued his practice—whenever he got upset, he would run three laps around it.

By the time Aediba had grown old, his property stretched far and wide. One day, after yet another argument, he grabbed his walking stick and, with great effort, completed his customary three laps. When he finally sat down to rest, the sun had already set. Concerned, his grandson approached him and said, “Grandpa, you’re too old to keep doing this. No one around here owns more land than you. You don’t need to run around your property anymore when you’re angry. Can you tell me why you’ve done this your whole life?”

Aediba smiled and replied, “When I was young, every time I got angry, I would run around my house and land. As I ran, I’d think to myself, ‘My house is so small, my land is so little—what right do I have to be angry or argue with anyone?’ That thought always calmed me down, and I would pour all my energy into working harder. Now, even though my house is large and my land vast, I walk around it and think, ‘I have so much—why should I waste my time quarreling with others?’ And once again, my anger fades.”

Just as every rose has its thorns, every person has traits that may frustrate us. The key to happiness is not trying to remove these “thorns,” but learning how to live with them, avoiding getting hurt.

This simple yet profound story teaches us a vital lesson about managing emotions. With family, there’s no need to argue to prove who’s right or wrong. Winning or losing a debate doesn’t matter—home is not a battlefield. We need to make sure our own thorns don’t harm those we love.

When interacting with others, especially those who may not see the world as we do, it’s wise to avoid unnecessary arguments. Not engaging in debates over who’s right shows maturity and emotional intelligence. In fact, most arguments are futile. The real strength lies in holding back, demonstrating grace, and knowing when to step away. Spiritual teachings from ancient times remind us, “When you open your mouth, your energy scatters; when your mind stirs, your internal strength cools.” Engaging in constant disputes not only wastes time but drains our energy.

On Mount Emei, there lived an old monk named Yongtong, who was over 100 years old. Someone once asked him, “Master, what is the secret to happiness?” Yongtong calmly replied, “Never argue.” The person asking wasn’t satisfied with this simple answer and said, “Master, I don’t quite agree with your idea that this is the secret.” Yongtong smiled and said, “Yes, you’re absolutely right…”

Life is full of challenges and difficulties, and none of us can avoid them. However, if we let every problem cause frustration or every small setback lead to anger, life will be full of turmoil. Truly strong individuals know how to control their emotions, step back, and manage problems calmly. Mastering our emotions isn’t about avoiding conflict entirely, but about learning to navigate it with wisdom and grace—leading to a life of peace and fulfillment.

Yang Jiang, my favorite contemporary female writer, lived a life intertwined with the turbulence of her times, yet she remained as pure and free as a cloud in the sky. Her works not only reveal the beauty of literature but also inspire us on how to maintain inner peace and composure amidst the chaos of the world.

Yang Jiang’s translation of the poem, “I compete with no one, and I disdain competing with anyone; I warm my hands by the fire of life, and when it dims, I am ready to go,” reflects her entire life. In her quiet dignity and grace, she transformed the hardships of life into something serene and beautiful, never letting bitterness take root.

Her unassuming nature is perhaps her most remarkable quality. While many chase after fame and recognition, Yang Jiang focused purely on her love for knowledge. Her reading, writing, and translation work were not for the sake of recognition, but for the joy of learning. In her essay “The Invisibility Cloak,” she explains that humility is the best protection in a complicated world. By not seeking heights, one doesn’t fear falling; by avoiding ambition, one retains a sense of innocence and inner calm. Yang Jiang embodied this wisdom throughout her life. During the Cultural Revolution, when she was assigned the humbling task of cleaning toilets, she used the opportunity to find freedom in adversity, relishing the quiet moments to read and reflect.

“Simple living and a noble soul are the highest realms of life,” she once said. This was not just a belief but a guiding principle for Yang Jiang. She valued her time deeply, distancing herself from superficial socializing and instead focusing on self-cultivation. Together with her husband, Qian Zhongshu, they shared a simple, intellectual life, each respecting the other’s need for space and quiet to work. After her husband’s passing, Yang Jiang withdrew even further from the world, spending her days immersed in writing and editing.

At the age of 92, Yang Jiang published her essay collection We Three, which received widespread acclaim. Even at the age of 103, she was still active in compiling and publishing The Complete Works of Yang Jiang, a reflection of her lifelong dedication to literature.

It was her ability to remove herself from the distractions of life that allowed her to create works of such lasting value.

Her translation of the eight-volume Don Quixote, once the best-selling Chinese version, drew criticism at one point as a “negative example.” Many writers rushed to her defense, but Yang Jiang responded with characteristic humility: “I sincerely declare that I am a humble translator. I have revised my translation over and over, and still feel it’s not good enough. I hope the experts will offer their guidance.” Her modesty and openness to improvement reflect the calm confidence she carried throughout her life.

In her book Walking on the Edge of Life, she wrote, “We once yearned for the waves of fate, only to realize in the end that the most beautiful scenery in life is the inner calm and composure.” This sentence captures the essence of her wisdom. She knew that, amid the noise and complexity of the outside world, it is the peace we cultivate within that is the most precious.

Yang Jiang rarely wore makeup, preferring to show her natural face to the world. This was not just about simplicity in appearance but about a deeper confidence and acceptance of her true self. She believed that external beauty was far less important than the richness of one’s inner life. As she wisely said, “A woman’s greatest strength is not how beautifully she dresses, but the ability to make herself happy no matter what happens.”

Through her life, Yang Jiang has shown us that even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, it is possible to maintain elegance and beauty by nurturing simplicity and inner richness. Her wisdom and grace continue to inspire us to live with quiet strength, away from the distractions of the world, focused on what truly matters.

Born in February 1988 in Chengdu, China—familiarly known as the “Land of Abundance”—Hang Kung Yee comes from a family deeply rooted in tradition and intellect. His lineage is remarkable: his great-grandfather was one of the “Four Sages” in fishing, woodcutting, farming, and studying, honored as the Sage of Learning. His grandfather, Feng Chi, was a celebrated scholar in Sichuan, renowned for his deep knowledge of classical texts and the principles of medicine and the I Ching. Carrying forward this intellectual legacy, his father, Professor Yungao Yi(H.H. Even after moving to the United States, he kept his artistic abilities concealed, even from his peers.

The Legacy of Dou Yanshan: A Story of Kindness, Virtue, and the Law of Cause and Effect

When I was a child, I read The Three Character Classic (三字经) and came across a verse: “Dou Yanshan, of righteous conduct, taught five sons, all became famous.” At the time, I didn’t realize how much meaning was packed into these simple lines. Later, I learned that they tell a profound story. Dou Yanshan’s life and deeds provide undeniable proof of the law of cause and effect, offering a timeless moral lesson for the world. I would like to share Dou Yanshan’s story with you.

Dou Yujun, also known as Yanshan due to his home in Youzhou (part of the Yan region), lived during the Later Jin period of the Five Dynasties. He lost his father at a young age, and was raised solely by his mother, to whom he showed deep filial respect, never daring to disobey her. At that time, most men married in their twenties, and by the age of thirty, if they had no children, they would worry about their lineage. Dou Yujun, still childless in his thirties, was deeply concerned about his future.

One night, Dou had a dream where his deceased grandfather appeared and said, “Yujun, your past life’s negative karma is heavy, which is why in this life, you are not only childless but also destined for a short life. My dear grandson, turn your heart toward goodness. Perform acts of kindness and help others. Perhaps by doing so, you may change your fate.” Upon waking, Dou remembered every word of his grandfather’s message. From that moment, he vowed to avoid all evil and pursue only good deeds.

One example of his kindness involved a servant who had stolen twenty thousand taels of silver. Fearing punishment, the servant wrote a bond stating that he was selling his young daughter to repay the debt and then fled. When Dou discovered this, instead of punishing the girl, he burned the bond and raised her as his own. When she grew up, he even arranged a marriage for her, providing a dowry.

On New Year’s Day, Dou went to Yanqing Temple to pray and found 200 taels of silver and 30 taels of gold near a meditation cushion. Believing it to be someone’s lost property, he waited in the temple for the owner to return. After some time, a man arrived, crying in distress. Dou asked him what was wrong, and the man explained, “My father has been captured by bandits, and after much effort, I gathered 200 taels of silver and 30 taels of gold to ransom him. But now I’ve lost everything!” Dou, realizing this man was the rightful owner, returned all the silver and gold and even gave him additional travel money. The man left, filled with gratitude.

Dou Yujun was known for his many acts of kindness. When friends or relatives couldn’t afford coffins for their deceased, he provided them. When children of poor families had no means to marry, he paid for their weddings. He lent money to those in need so they could start businesses, helping countless people survive. Despite his generosity, Dou lived a frugal life. Each year, after setting aside the necessary expenses for his family, he used the rest of his income to help others. He even established forty schools, collected thousands of books, and hired teachers of high moral character to educate the youth. He paid the tuition of poor students, helping cultivate many outstanding individuals.

One night, Dou had another dream in which his grandfather appeared again, saying, “You have done many good deeds. Because of your great virtue, Heaven has extended your life by thirty-six years and will bless you with five noble sons, all of whom will achieve great success. When your time comes, you will ascend to Heaven.” His grandfather added, “The law of cause and effect is absolute. The consequences of good and evil deeds may appear in this life, in the next, or in the lives of your descendants. Heaven’s justice is unerring.”

After this, Dou Yujun continued to cultivate virtue with even greater diligence. Eventually, he had five sons, and due to his strict and righteous upbringing, they were all disciplined, harmonious, and filial. All five sons passed the imperial examinations and achieved high positions: his eldest, Dou Yi, became a Minister of State; his second, Dou Yan, became a Hanlin Academician; his third, Dou Cheng, served as Deputy Prime Minister; his fourth, Dou Kan, was an Imperial Chronicler; and his youngest, Dou Xi, became Assistant to the Minister of the Left. Even his eight grandsons achieved prominence. To honor Dou’s achievements, the imperial official Feng Dao wrote a poem:
“Yanshan’s Dou family, with righteous teachings, raised five sons, all blossoming like red laurels.”

Dou himself lived to the age of eighty-two. He predicted the time of his passing, bid farewell to his friends, bathed, dressed in clean clothes, and passed away peacefully.

The law of cause and effect is undeniable. Whether the consequences of good deeds are seen in this life, in the lives of one’s descendants, or in future reincarnations, they are inevitable. Dou Yujun not only enjoyed a long life and wealth, but his descendants also prospered, and his peaceful death is a testament to the blessings awaiting him in his next life. His vast and profound kindness brought him blessings in this life, in the lives of his descendants, and in the afterlife.

The renowned Song Dynasty scholar, Fan Zhongyan, used Dou Yujun’s story to teach his own children about the importance of good deeds, leading to the prosperity of the Fan family. While many people knew about Dou Yujun’s deeds, few truly acted on them. It is like entering a treasure mountain and leaving empty-handed. What a missed opportunity that would be!

Illuminate Others, Illuminate Yourself

On a pitch-black night, a wandering ascetic on a journey to seek the Buddha arrived in a remote village. The dark streets were bustling with villagers coming and going.

The ascetic walked into a narrow alley and noticed a faint yellow light shining from deep within the quiet alleyway. A villager remarked, “The blind man is coming.”

“Blind man?” The ascetic was puzzled. He asked another villager beside him, “Is the person carrying the lamp really blind?”

The answer was affirmative. The ascetic couldn’t understand.

A blind man, who has no concept of day and night, who cannot see mountains or rivers, or the vibrant world of peach blossoms and green willows—he doesn’t even know what light looks like. Isn’t it ridiculous for him to carry a lamp?

The lamp gradually drew closer, and the faint yellow light moved slowly from the depths of the alley to the ascetic’s feet.

Still perplexed, the ascetic asked, “May I ask, are you truly blind?”

The blind man carrying the lamp replied, “Yes, I have lived in darkness ever since I entered this world.”

The ascetic asked, “Since you can’t see anything, why are you carrying a lamp?”

The blind man said, “Is it night now? I heard that in the dark, without the light of a lamp, no one can see anything, just like me. So I lit a lamp.”

The ascetic, beginning to understand, said, “Oh, so you are carrying the lamp to light the way for others?”

But the blind man replied, “No, it’s for myself.”

“For yourself?” The ascetic was stunned.

The blind man slowly explained, “Have you ever been bumped into by other travelers because of the darkness?”

The ascetic said, “Yes, just a moment ago, I wasn’t paying attention and was bumped by two people.”

The blind man then said thoughtfully, “But I haven’t been. Though I am blind and cannot see anything, by carrying this lamp, I not only light the way for others but also allow them to see me. This way, they won’t bump into me because they can’t see.”

Hearing this, the ascetic suddenly realized.

He looked up and sighed, “I’ve been traveling far and wide to find the Buddha, but little did I know that the Buddha was right beside me all along.”

It turns out that Buddha nature is like a lamp. As long as I light it, even if I cannot see the Buddha, the Buddha will be able to see me.

The story is simple, yet it seems to ignite a light within the darkest corners of our hearts.

The Merchant’s Compassion: A Tale of Kindness and Divine Protection

In the past, there was a merchant from Anhui Province named Wang Zhiren. He was over forty years old and, though successful in business with some savings, his only regret was that he had no son.

One day, while out on a business trip, he was walking alone by the riverside when he suddenly saw a young woman, dressed as a village wife, holding a baby and jumping into the river. He was shocked and wanted to jump in to rescue them, but he lamented that he couldn’t swim and was unable to save them. In that critical moment, he looked up and saw several fishing boats in the distance on the river. He raised his hand and shouted for help, but when his first few calls went unanswered, he ran and shouted that he would offer twenty taels of gold to anyone who saved them.

Only then did the fishermen rush over, and they finally pulled the young woman and the baby out of the water. Wang Zhiren handed over the twenty taels of gold to the fishermen and then asked the young woman why she had jumped into the river with the baby. The woman tearfully explained, “My husband works as a laborer elsewhere, and we kept a pig at home, planning to sell it to pay the rent. Yesterday, a pig trader came by, and I sold the pig, but after he left, I discovered that the money I received was all counterfeit. My husband has a very violent temper. If he finds out, he’ll certainly beat me severely. We are so poor that we can barely survive, so I decided to drown myself and my baby in the river.”

Hearing this, Wang Zhiren was filled with compassion. He asked how much the pig had been worth and gave her twice that amount in real silver. The young woman, encountering such a kind and compassionate person, was overwhelmed with indescribable joy and gratitude. She expressed her heartfelt thanks and blessings to Wang Zhiren and, to ensure she could repay his kindness in the future, she carefully asked for his name, birthplace, and residence. She then returned home with her baby, feeling consoled.

When she arrived home, her husband had already returned. The young woman recounted in detail how she had received counterfeit money for the pig, her fear of being beaten, her attempted suicide with the baby, and how a kind man had saved them and given her real silver.

Her husband was deeply moved upon hearing about Wang Zhiren’s compassion and decided to accompany his wife to Wang’s lodging to express their gratitude.

When Wang Zhiren, still in bed, heard them knocking at the door, he got up and went outside. As he stepped out, there was a sudden loud crash from inside the room, startling all three of them. They turned to see that the wall of the room had collapsed due to damage from several days of heavy rain, and the bricks, tiles, and beams had fallen, crushing the bed where Wang had been sleeping.

Wang Zhiren exclaimed, “Oh my! That was so dangerous! If you two hadn’t knocked on my door and called me out, I would have been crushed to death by the falling wall and bricks!”

The couple replied in unison, “This is the will of Heaven. A kind-hearted person like you, Mr. Wang, should not suffer such a calamity.”

Later, Wang Zhiren’s wife gave birth to several sons, and Wang Zhiren lived to the ripe old age of ninety-six, passing away peacefully without illness.

A Sacred Bodhi Leaf

The Spiritual Journey of Chiang Wei-Kuo

Chiang Wei-Kuo(蔣偉國), the son of the former Kuomintang Chairman Chiang Kai-Shek (蒋介石), is often remembered as a prominent political figure. However, many may not know that he was also a deeply devout Buddhist, with a profound understanding of Buddhist teachings. His dedication to Buddhism led him to engage in meaningful discussions and exchanges with Western religious figures, leaving a lasting impact. In fact, the president of a league of eighty-three American universities once said that Chiang Wei-Kuo was his godfather. But beyond his public life, Chiang Wei-Kuo’s spiritual journey was one of deep significance.

In his early years, Chiang Wei-Kuo made a special pilgrimage to India, seeking to connect with the sacred sites of the Buddha and attain enlightenment.

While standing beneath the Bodhi Tree, where Shakyamuni Buddha himself attained supreme enlightenment, Chiang Wei-Kuo made a solemn vow to benefit all living beings. At that very moment, a large leaf suddenly fell from the tree. This leaf, unusually large compared to the others, seemed to be a sign. Deeply moved, Chiang Wei-Kuo took the leaf back home and showed it to his father, Chiang Kai-Shek. Touched by the story, Chiang Kai-Shek instructed his son to enshrine the leaf in the family’s ancestral hall. Since that day, the Bodhi leaf became a revered object of worship in the Chiang family’s ancestral hall.

Years later, in May 1995, Master Yi Yungao (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) led a delegation of eight individuals to visit Taiwan. During this visit, Chiang Wei-Kuo, with deep reverence and devotion, requested to become a disciple of Master Yi Yungao. As part of his request, he presented the sacred Bodhi leaf as an offering. In a heartfelt gesture, Chiang Wei-Kuo personally inscribed the story of how he obtained the leaf in Bodhgaya, its significance to his family, and the profound spiritual connection it held. This offering symbolized his deep respect for the Buddha and his unwavering commitment to his spiritual path.

On November 13, 2008, the U.S. Congress hosted a special art exhibition featuring the works of Buddha Mother (Professor Yuhua Shou Zhiwang) at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. To ensure the safe transport of these precious artworks, a decision was made to rent an RV (Recreational Vehicle) and form a convoy with trucks carrying the pieces. Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, along with Buddha Mother and their disciples, stayed in the RV throughout the journey, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage across America.

The convoy, led by Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and accompanied by several dozen disciples, departed from Los Angeles on October 25, 2008. Over the course of 33 days, they journeyed across more than 20 states, traveling from the west coast to the east coast. Despite the busy preparations for an exhibition in Washington, D.C., Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III delivered teachings to his disciples almost every evening. These teachings were later compiled into a 19-volume collection titled Teachings from the Eastward Journey.

Throughout the journey, numerous sacred signs appeared wherever Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III visited. One such miraculous event occurred when the Buddha and his disciples were resting under a Western Bodhi tree. As the Buddha was speaking to Venerable Tsemang and other disciples about Chiang Wei-Kuo’s offering of a Bodhi leaf years ago, a rustling sound suddenly came from above. With a distinct “thud,” a Western Bodhi leaf fell from the tree, astonishing everyone present.

Western Bodhi leaves typically have white veins with light pinkish veins on the back. However, this particular leaf was different. While it shared the same shape as other Bodhi leaves, its veins were strikingly red on both sides, without any trace of white veins.

Moreover, it was extraordinarily large, much larger than any other leaf on the tree. The timing of this event was miraculous, coinciding precisely with the Buddha’s recounting of how Chiang Wei-Kuo had obtained a large Bodhi leaf in India. This unique leaf falling from the Western Bodhi tree signified that wherever the true Dharma of the Tathagatas is spoken, profound responses occur.

Additionally, after the Eastward Journey ended and they returned to Los Angeles, Namo H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III manifested amrita (nectar) at the Vajra Mandala in Pasadena. This further confirmed that the “Teachings from the Eastward Journey” are the pure and supreme authentic Dharma of the Buddha, a testament to the spiritual power and significance of the journey.
